I started getting into Digimon recently and right now I'm playing World 1. The Digimon universe is fucking weird, man. So they're monsters made out of Data that just live their lives casually like civilized humans with cities that have banks, hospitals and restaurants and shit but some of them live in jungles and canyons. Why? Why are some so passive and others so bloodthirsty? Feed me on Digimon lore

Good to hear. I'm ambivalent to Digimon on the whole but they looked interesting in general (and I love Yasuda's art) and, what with Pokemon finally fucking up enough for me to skip a gen for the first time I might as well get into Digimon

The sprites look alright, but there's something a bit barebones or unpolished about this (understandably unfinished) screenshot. And I think the scale looks a bit off. I hope they polish it a bit more.

In Digimon world it will be explained the specific reason for that File island to be like that, in the intro they said every digimon lived in the city but one day they got dumber because plot reasons. Is a multiverse and every digital world is different.
But as a franchise, digimons are smart creatures, some are dumb like animals but nothing stop them from learning, like everything some are good others are bad, good digimons make cities and teach others, bad digimons try to take over big territories and become more powerfull.
Digimons are data, they can be corrupted or updated.

The problem is the way they animate, they look fine in stills.

My problem with the sprites is that they look kind of cheap, you can see by the way they move that they're just a couple of sprites in one rig that move independently depending on the type of movement they make, like flash, rather than be traditionally animated sprites.

Can't really expect that level of dedication from a game with a shit budget like Digimon, but still, kind of a bummer.

Digimon World 3 if you want a more traditional rpg. Cyber Sleuth is also a good option for that.

I think you're going to be stuck with Agumon since it looks like the partners are as relevant to the story as the kids. Survive does have serious original adventure vibes, but with a darker tone since it looks like the entire class ends up in the digital world.

Ah, I got it right then. I've only watched a few eps of Xros. Don't really like it. I just find it weird that mons don't directly digivolve to it's higher form. But needs to fuse or something. Same reason why I didn't like Frontier but liked Savers. Shoutmon did get a direct digivolution line to it's champion form IIRC, right? The hypest moment of Xros Wars was the episode when every MC of past Digimon came over to fight and fuse with Shoutmon V5 (or V6).

I mean, at least with Frontier I kinda get it because the way Frontier does it eliminates the Tamer/partner dynamic that is a key appeal of the franchise, but with Xros Wars, it's about a team of combining mecha, which is awesome.

Anyway, yes, halfway through, Shoutman gains the ability to evolve into Omega Shoutmon, and Metal Greymon evolves into Zeek Greymon. And then they DigiXros with each other after that

Yeah, the Adventure vibes of this really look solid for a good JRPG story. Adventure really had a great sense of scope and scale, even when the gang was taking down villains who ended up being minor in the grand scale of things.

I know. It's just my autism messing with me. I grew up knowing Digimons goes from Baby>In-Training> Rookie> Champion> Ultimate and then to Mega. Then jogress and that was introduced somewhere around the 2000s. 02 kinda started to mess with my head with it's armor evolution. Tamers is fine to me that whole mega fuse with human I just right it off as a mechanic that they repurpose from Adventure (the crests). But pay no heed to it, it's just my autism and resistance to anything new.

These past few games have tried to be faithful with how gimmicky evolutions work. You need the right Digimental for armor forms, the right Human/Beast spirit for Frontier stuff and so forth. They've been doing that for like a decade. The real issue is that they have like 1000 Digimon left to model, and most of those aren't just recolors. Meanwhile, they put the main team on a 2D sprite based game for some fucking reason, which is further delaying the dream from being realized, all the while new Digimon designs come out every year, possibly at a faster rate than they'll be able to be added to the games.

Only the games made after Xros Wars were good (and even then, only some of them), you can skip any and all anime.
