Some of my favorites are Gunbuster, Getter Armageddon, Gravion, Bryger and Gakusaver. If you're not familiar with /m/ stuff, start with Gunbuster. It's both short and a classic.

For my money, X is the one that has the list I like the least, but it somehow managed to have the most entertaining writing anyhow. V has too much dimension hopping shit and never develops any of its settings and T focuses too hard on its OG villains; you defeat them so many times and yet it still expects you to take them seriously as a credible threat. X feels just right

Please don't lie, there's barely any Gurren Lagann in X and there's no Code Geass in X at all. Simon and Lelouch spend the whole game just sitting around watching the plots from other series happen until the game predictably switches to the TTGL plot for the finale

In earlier SRW games, Gunbuster would be OP, yes, but in T, everything is so stupidly overpowered that Gunbuster actually comes off as just mid tier. Unlike some of the other big dick units, it just has no multiplier, and its base damage doesn't reach the level of some high tier combo moves so it really starts to fall behind. Like there's at least half a dozen units in T I'd say are better.

Spike, at least before the 20 upgrade bars on the first playthrough got patched in. He was just not strong enough, even some side characters were better. Ange is really underwhelming before endgame as well since you have to wait for her to get several plot powerups before she can start dishing out as much damage as Mazinger and Getter could do from the beginning

Those suggestions are good, I'd like to add Mazinger. You can jump in where the fuck ever and it's all good. The one in these SRWs is Shin Mazinger and the first episode might throw you for a loop but just roll with it, it's pretty good. Double-check with /m/ that you're watching the director's cut version, god knows they need an actual thread about mech anime anyhow.

Aside from that, the original Mazinger Z looks daunting at 90+ episodes but it's fun and it's not a race, take your time and savor it. Make sure to watch Mazinger vs the Great General of Darkness when you're done.

Or you could jump into the seven episode Mazinkaiser which is tits and action and boss's ass and years later I'm still traumatized by the shower scene. Make sure to watch Mazinkaiser vs the Great General of Darkness when you're done.

Mazinkaiser SKL is completely stand alone and unrelated to anything else and it's like three episodes of giant robots and wholesome fun.

There's also Mazinger Z Infinity which I should really get around to watching instead of lurking Yea Forums.

But if you just watch one for these SRWs I guess watch Shin Mazinger even if it's a shame to let the others languish

Which one has good OGs? I love the cast in T but I can barely play through it because everything about the Tyranado Rex is boring as fuck.

each time you sell something out of country or change something about a game to resell it (ie change the language) you have to pay licensing fees again to do so, with how many properties make it into these crossover games and the uncertainty of sales, companies sometimes just play it safe

SRW in general has a ton of licensing and distribution issues related because it's a giant anime crossover, so of course it does. It's more surprising that these games are getting ported at all.

Let's suppose that Super Robot Wars E features characters and robots from the anime shows 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
1's distribution license outside Japan was bought by company A
2 and 4's distribution license outside Japan was bought by company B
No one localized 2
5's distribution license outside Japan was bought by a company C that stopped localizing anime years ago.
To sell Super Robot Wars E Bandai would need to make deals with companies A, B and C. Suddenly, weeks before SRW E's release, company D picked up 2 for localization fucking up your efforts.

I'm sure Discotek realizes that having a new game related to the anime is good for sales.

The SEA versions are where our English translations are coming from, yes. The only one with unreadable SEA gibberish is OG MD, although T has a rather noticeable amount of errors in its script as well, likely on account of the SEA version being released at the same time as the Japanese version

It's not an excuse; that's literally the reason why those games have never been localized in the west. The closest it was to happening was Super Robot Wars Alpha on the Dreamcast but then Harmony Gold, the owners of the Macross license on the west, refused to give permission to it so the localization was cancelled.

For the past three years Bandai Namco started using a "loophole" of sorts: English translation on the PS4 / Vita / Switch versions for the asian market. So, a westerner can import it from an Asian store and play it on his / her region free console and none of those license holders can do jack shit because the game isn't being sold directly on the countries where they operate.

I bought the PS4 versions of V and X through Play-Asia.

Also I think the translating staff got shuffled around between V&X's translation and T's translation

There's a Gundam version called G-Generations that has much better stories and gameplay mechanics. I didn't hate SRWV or X but playing them after G-Generations I was very disappointed. That being said I'm not sure if Switch got G-Gen, think I read they did but I played all of these games on my Vita which has ten times the build quality and ergonomics of the switch if you're going to be playing a game that doesn't push either system as is it's worth considering.

Wataru has Hong Kong subs only, but I watched it all the way through anyway. Between the subs and the scenarios in X, it's pretty easy to get the gist of what's going on.

And it is good. So good that I'd call it the best fantasy themed mecha anime. Not that that's a high bar, most fantasy mecha shows are shit (and I've watched most of them), but Wataru is a full of charm and I'd be able to enjoy it regardless.

I didn't feel like it was any more or less than what you get in SRW. I did feel like you had more customization and things to do with your units and I became more attached to them as a result. I also recall feeling like there was more strategy and preparation available in G-Gen

I don't think that's how it works, you need to be in the region to have access to that store, or use a VPN otherwise (that's what I did to download DOAX VP) but I ignore what happens if you buy a game from another region using a VPN and then change it to your regular one.

Both Z and Great felt really underwhelming for me in T, specially when you compare it both with how it moved in the movie and with how cool Zero animations were.

Yeah, with T, I enjoyed it, but it really did feel like a letdown in many respects, namely in the balancing of series plot. I really feel like there was way too much OG and not enough GGG. GGG in general was completely pissed on in the game, its units suffering two attacks the worst, GGG itself looking like shit, only half of the show being in (and the worse half of the show on top of that), only a single Zonder for the generic enemies, so on and so forth

The cuts to G Gundam were equally strange. Why the fuck did they have Nobel instead of Rising, Shining or Spiegel? All three of them were way more important to the plot than Allenby. And I really wish they would stop doing Dunbine until they have the resources to do it properly. It's absolutely incredible how the Dunbine OVA, which is three episodes long and consists of only two fucking units still felt like they didn't have the budget to do it properly with how much of an afterthought the Zwauth was in the game. Speaking of, who made the decision to dump all the budget on the New Arhan? No one, and I mean, NO ONE gives a fuck about Expelled from Paradise

And there were just a whole bunch of other things that could have been clever that just didn't happen, like how everyone was thinking the game would start with CCA and then timeskip to the Gundam Fight happening instead of the bullshit we actually got. The game even teased what I thought would happen, the Claw Man using the Psycommu for his plan, but then didn't follow through. Just lots of wasted potential.

It's like the devs have been breaking down more and more with each new game. This yearly release schedule has to stop.

Bebop was handled really strangely. Like they only did a single unit for it, the Swordfish, and no enemies. They tried to adapt scenarios from it, but you only see them in the VN sequences. Vicious is only seen once, on a route split.

Any of them really, the series is pretty cool about letting you turn anything into a murder machine. Especially the newer ones with the ridiculous trainings and buffs you can add to your units, then you get into the ng+ exclusive upgrades. SRW knows how to let you experience overkill.
