This game was fucking great.
Are all Ys games this good?
This game was fucking great
most are, even if they are pretty different
They're alright, but you only need to play 1 from each generation. They get pretty samey, and you'll get burned out pretty quick going through them all at once.
The only one I've actively disliked was Kefin. Game was piss easy, magic was pointless and gave you no incentive to level you up, the dull characters sucked the life out of what was otherwise an interesting setting...
> check out price on amazon
> 180 USD for ps4 version
What the flying fuck? Why has the price inflated so fucking high? It's like Nisa printed only 5 copies of this shit. Does Nisa not know anything about supply and demand? No wonder they are not doing well.
Maybe for the 2D ones. The 3D ones are all great. Even the party-based ones. The shitty RTS and the Westernized version of Napishtim don't count
Go to fucking sleep, Luismi
No, VIII is definitely the best Ys game
However, try Memories of Celceta. It's quite similar.
damn i bought it on release and havent played it yet.
So far not quite but still good.
8 ended up being one of my favorite games and I've been going back through the other falcom games but none have been as good IMO. Didn't like Celceta's cast as much (both narrative and gameplay wise) and Origins combat felt a bit too simple. Still pretty good though just not as good.
Best song in the fucking game

Best fucking level 1 ever. Talk about a first impression.
>Best fucking level 1 ever

origins and oath of felghana are really good too
I've never played a Ys game and probably never will but holy shit is the main theme fucking great

>Buying physical PS4 games
Why.jpg
I advise you sell it asap before they do a reprint on it.
Because I like owning my games instead of a digital copy where you don't even own your games.
I played all of them back to back in linear order. The only one I felt drag was Ys Seven which has easily aged the worst. At least there's no bloated HP bars in V
I've started laughing like a madman when i understood that the story is basically a Mass Effect done right.
Seven has pretty banging music tho.
There's used copies on Amazon for... $46? Damn, I didn't know the game was still worth that much. I wonder how much I could get for my copy...
I wish I gave this series a shot years ago. I caved and finally tried it out because I was getting burned out on Rean’s games, and I enjoyed Tokyo Xanadu. I’m only about halfway through VIII, and I genuinely can’t remember having this much fun in a video game. I can’t wait to finish and then bouncing around the series, picking the games that seem neat.
is the switch port still shitty?
>Just want some herbs but the dino's start swarming
youtube.com
Yes, but to be fair, every port is shitty because NISA hired incompetent chinks. PS4 is still the best way to play if you aren't savvy enough to patch the PC version.
Which version of this game is playable? I heard nothing but bad things about the localization.
>patch the PC version
How? I'm crashing every few hours
Oath in Felghana and Origin are exceptional games, but they are a different breed from Ys 8. Game is straight up action based. Very little grinding (aside from a bit of leveling, since the damage formula is a bit weird and 1-2 levels make a lot of difference in take dealt/taken). Boss fights are much, much better in those games too, with more focus on (double) jumping, positioning and greed management.
I really wish they'd come back to that formula. The team-based series don't feel the same in terms of challenge - flash guards are simply not as deep as jumping and positioning. Also because the older series have much smaller characters, they can make the battlefields larger with more complicated bosses.
>Physicalfag thinks he owns shit
I never claimed to be savvy, or to know if a working fix exists.
bros which ones do I need to play to understand the story in IX
i havent played one since the psp days
>Very little grinding (aside from a bit of leveling, since the damage formula is a bit weird and 1-2 levels make a lot of difference in take dealt/taken).
Confiremed for having played normal difficulty. On hard and Nightmare they cut exp gained from monsters and increase their damage/health so you DO have to grind for those 1-2 levels
> retard that owns nothing
I've only played on Nightmare/Inferno. That's exactly what I mean by "a bit of leveling", grinding in these games are nearly not as hair tearing as many other games out there.
There's also some sort of diminishing return after some levels. If you feel like the exp bar isn't growing, it's a signal to stop.
Probably Napishtim and Seven, since Adol was 23 in those games and he's 24 in IX. Ys games are pretty much all self contained, so you'll be fine without replaying.
Man.
This thread is reminding me I have to play more Ys. Done with 1&2 Chronicles+, The Oath in Felghana and Origin (with some limited exposure to Ark of Napishtim during my PS2 days), where should I head next?
>> retard that owns nothing
instead of owning...plastic cases?
Finish Ark or go to Ys 8, it's the most polished of the team based games and since their stories are disjoint you aren't missing much.
Aw yeah
>Adol befriended Dogi and they both love adventuring
there I summarized everything you need to understand ur
>grinding in these games are nearly not as hair tearing as many other games out there.
Maybe not, but the grinding is still very tedious because it's mandatory. If you don't grind for a bit in every new area to acclimate yourself to the area's boss, then you will be dealing 1-2 damage per sword swipe to bosses that have four digit health bars and ways to regenerate (fuck you mantis boss)
How is the Vita version? Portability is a very strong positive for me and had been debating between it and Switch.
people ought to play Ys1&2.
those are, while bumpy, exceptonal games and portray the essence of Ys: going on an adventure on your own to overcome any hardship while meeting people destined to support you. Ys OiF is right behind them.
They used to be better, then flash guarding and party shit came along and fucked up the combat
Agreed.
And people who have played the Chronicles versions should check out some of the other versions available, for context and some retro rush.
Same with Oath.
The Switch port runs about the same as the Vita game but at a higher resolution and it has more content. It's kinda a no-brainer which one to get unless you're a Vita fanboy.
I think this is more of a problem in Origin, since it has regenerating bosses. Also, because Origin requires far more mashing (bosses have strict vulnerable cycles, and on average boss fights last far longer than in Felghana). I personally find Felghana to be a more comfortable game because of this, saved for a few boss fights like the fiery fire chicken.
Currently playing Memories of Celceta and it's not that fun. I wonder why, I remember enjoying Ys Seven back then.
How long will it take for IX to be localized?
There's only one instance where you have to grind, it's in that sand area in Origin. Besides that you've probably played through the whole game overleveled. Head to time attack and check how much harder the bosses become.
>instead of owning...plastic cases?
I don't see your point. I can let my friend borrow my physical disc or I can resell it. Can you do the same with your digital collection?
it's a really shit remake honestly.
you should dump it and play both Mask of the Sun for the true script and Dawn of Ys which is Hudson soft's vision.
On the contrary that game along with 7 and Cecelta fucking sucked. Play literally any Ys game but those.
Fucking NU Falcom is garbage. Party system Ys, Cold Steel, Tokyo Xanadu. Fucking garbage.
>I can let my friend borrow my physical disc
And what has to do bith ownership? you can share digital games as well.
>or I can resell it
so you can sell an acount.
Granted, having physical games is cool(I collect 3ds games), I dont see the point of having actual ps4 or xb1 discs or whatever because games are so buggy, online-integrated or incomplete nowadadays, you still have do download files in order to properly play them and for me that breaks the purpose of having physical games.
seethe harder
Bump bros unite. I refreshed my guide after playing through the series again. I even played every 16-bit version of Ys III that I hadn't previously. I anticipate a lot more Ys discussion in the following months, and consequently a lot more people wanting to get into the series. I'll refresh my guide again after I play Ys IX.
>mentioning Wanderers when Oath exists
I think you could make that chart clearer so some poor greenhorn doesn't end up playing Wanderers.
Allow me to expand upon this. Falcom used to be one of the best game developers. Ys games were always fantastic, and needless to say Trails in the Sky and the Crosbell games were masterpieces.
But then Falcom decided to BETRAY their main fanbase of older, dedicated fans to try and hop on the anime trends that most shitty JRPGs fall into nowadays. Once Falcom decided to pander to underage Otaku and ironic weebs it was all over. Falcom has even said themselves that they targeted younger, dumber audiences and tried to appeal to them by following shitty trends and becoming just another generic anime game developer. Needless to say, real Falcom fans like myself were disappointed. Personally I not only boycott their new games but also encourage people not to support them whenever I can. Many do the same. It is not an exaggeration to say Falcom betrayed us.
And here we have the NU Falcom fanbase everybody. Speaks in memes, probably underage, probably an ironic weeb. Fucking depressing.
Any word on Celceta Kai coming to the US?
>And what has to do bith ownership?
What doesn't have to do with ownership?
> you can share digital games as well.
Only with those you register as your family member and only on steam since other PC stores like Epic doesn't allow that.
> so you can sell an acount.
Easily prone for fraud or account banning. Every TOS of every PC store does not allow selling of accounts. Also you can easily claim you got hacked or password stolen to get your account back after selling it, so it's risky as fuck for easy fraud.
>I dont see the point of having actual ps4 or xb1 discs or whatever because games are so buggy, online-integrated or incomplete nowadadays, you still have do download files in order to properly play them
Most bugs aren't that bad that won't let you play the game if you don't patch it. If your internet goes out, you can still play brand new games just fine with the actual disc.
Ys Oath In Felghana and Origin are fucking incredible
>disgaea d2
I said most. Also fuck NISA.
That's when you return your physical copy and get your money back. Fuck any company that does that shit.
I got Ys 8 in the mail soon
It better be as great as you fuckers say it is because I didn't like Memories of Celceta that much
for me, it's Laxia
It sucks. Only ironic weebs and waifu faggots like enjoy it.
Play a real Falcom game like Oath or Origin.
I've already played Oath
It was fantastic
Any of the non party system Ys games are classics. Just don't bother with NU Falcom games like party system Ys.
Only recent game that made me baww like a little bitch after I finished it. She had a hard life...
>lol why would we prepare for Western release after the last one nearly destroyed a decade of good will?
Kondo's a fucking idiot.
>Any of the non party system Ys games are classics.
Unironically better than Celceta.
I've played Chronicles 1 and 2, Oath in Felghana and Memories of Celceta
Chronicles 1 was mediocre, Chronicles 2 was pretty great, Oath in Felghana was amazing and Memories of Celceta was the worst one yet.
It's by far the most polished game in the new engine
It somehow should be at best slightly better than Celceta and Seven but it somehow is miles better
Didn't say every installment was good, but that they were classics. Any real gamer or especially anybody calling themselves a Falcom fan should play them.
Also this. Now this is comparing apples to oranges, but I would also say it is better than the entire Cold Steel saga.
>Celceta was the worst one yet
Of course it is, it is made by NU Falcom.
>2 >1
Shit tier taste, 2 long overstays its welcome.
Mask of the Sun is still the worst Ys game and 8 > Wanderers, Kefin, and arguably Napishtim. The trends are mostly correct (Celceta is garbage and Seven was a sign that the Renaissance had ended), but generalizing helps no one.
I refuse to say anything positive about a game produced by the sellout hacks at NU Falcom.
10/10 game, 0/10 ending. how could they drop the ball that hard holy shit literally anything would be better than THAT
did you get the true ending? I didn't think it was that bad.
afaik from looking online yes, if not please tell me because holy shit
girl sacrifices everything, watches her entire species die and bets it all to stop the lacrimosa. fails, her people and all those that came before are literally deleted from existence meaning they are not only dead but never existed in the first place, but for some reason Maia decides to keep Adol's age in while not giving a shit about the other ones... This is equivalent of the entire game not existing canonically, all those plot points that were brought up during the game are never connected, the deus ex feels forced and nonsensical as fuck. also Dana is now forced to be cucked for eternity overseeing the thing she sacrificed everything to stop that's pretty shit desu, Maia is a bitch. where were you when the game deus ex retconned itself out of existence because it was too lazy to resolve plot properly
>tfw the bad end is better than the true end because they cut the retardation early on
ye that's it
fuck
party based ys is fucking trash
>doing some exploration
>OH SHIT ADOL THE CAMP IS GETTING FUCKED, COME BACK
its so annoying
its nothing compared to seven where you gotta grind to level up all your characters, then grind their abilities up, and then grind for their gear
1 and 2 are great. They really do a lot with minimal mechanics and thats part of why the 2.5d games shine too.
she looks like she took a laxative
>Chronicles 2 over 1
sure if you like mazes or reading gamefaqs
Tower sequence of 1 alone puts it far above
>The team-based series don't feel the same in terms of challenge - flash guards are simply not as deep as jumping and positioning. Also because the older series have much smaller characters, they can make the battlefields larger with more complicated bosses.
You nailed it. The Party based games are fun enough on their own and I appreciate how they add more exploration aspects, but the combat is butchered. The 2.5D games were fast paced and required a sort of precision, to the point where I'd say theyre sort of shmup inspired. The boss would attack and to actually dodge that youd have to weave through the still lingering previous attack. And you were also punished heavily for not thinking at the same time.
Meanwhile the party based games, you control an amorphous blob. Positioning is something that no longer matters because you're not really in control of the position of 2/3 of your team, so right off the bat you loose that shmup-inspired precision. Flash Guard is fucking stupid and removes all joy from combat, but the dodge roll is a huge offender too, since you can just roll to escape once you see the boss flash, your never really in a situation where you gotta have good positioning. Abilities are kind of there just to give the player something to do since they no longer have to jump or weave through things. Its just so fucking shit.
And on top of it all the writing is simple as always(which is good to me), but now since they have a cast of 50 characters you gotta see them struggle to add dialogue about shit that cant really be elaborated on much further.
I see that ys9 only has 1 character playable at a time? If thats right I hope they take the opportunity to make combat good again, but theres no way theyll resist the urge to add a bunch of bloated mechanics that only take away from the experience anyway i kind of just forgot i was responding to you
yeah i agree with the boss complexity dropping significantly. the only 2 fun bosses in 8 for me were Mephorash and _____Io____ since they were really fast, and had low cooldowns between attacks so they kept me occupied. but they're still nothing compared to the bosses from the previous games, especially the big climbable ones. also _____Io____ was fun because you fight her in solo mode as the fastest character in the game
This. Fuck NU Falcom and their casualized ironic weeb pandering garbage.
