A billion online games all competing for the attention of the 18-32 year old audience with disposable income means that they need to constantly be pushing out updates in order to stay at the forefront of peoples' minds.
People have been trained to be expecting constant updates as a result of this and if a game announces it will no longer be doing updates (but the servers aren't going down or anything) then this is seen as the game being 'dead.'

I liked splatfests for the shifty stages and the temporary faction war, but turf war is probably the least fun mode in the game and you're forced to play it for the whole event.

updates and community events for a game make it feel alive and organic, as if it's constantly evolving and changing. obviously splat 2 wont die in the literal sense, wont ever, but it'll lose a bit of it's magic and stagnate.
