I tried playing Disgaea 1, but it just seemed like such a slough. I got to chapter 5 before stopping, because now it seemed like enemies just got a power spike in terms of hp and abilities, but trying to level any sort of new unit take far too long unless the stars align and there is a map with +exp bonus gauge reward, and there are enough neutral spots that won't kill any low level unit that I want to level, once I break the geos. It seemed like I was just suppose to spend 30+ minutes per low level Item World for some freebie items and gear through bonus gauge, and leave with a lower tier item that was boosted to stats about 2-3 tiers higher than it is.
Was I missing a certain strategy for a more fluid play-through? Most of my units were level 10-13, with the exception of Laharl, Pleinair, and a starter Blue Skull that has become my artillery mortar. I got to rank 4 with Laharl and Pleinair, but the triple exp bonus for first unit killed does not seem useful for leveling multiple new people.

I'd say stick to a smaller team as its easier to keep them leveled and well equip. Another thing to do is use the item world to make strengthen the items you do have. Just ten floors and can make a big difference.

Define a smaller team. I get new tier of units, so I want to try them out and move their abilities to my main lads, but the only ones I can do that with easily, are mages/clerics, because the hospital gives a bunch of Max SP items, that allow for ridiculous magic spam and easy staff mastery.

Aim for at most five units. Less is easier to manage but five shouldn't be too hard to keep up to date with.

The main draw is taking your favorite units and maxing their stats out in the tens of millions. For those not interested in the grind, the story mode maps have a good balance of enemies and unique terrain to make just the basic play very enjoyable.

When does the stats start coming in? I'm pruning my team from but unless the gear gains start adding several hundred stats from item world, I'm not seeing it happen anytime soon, and leveling up units that I like is still tedious when the next tier of them unlocks and has better innate stats.

The big stats don't typically kick in until you start working on the post game, though you can kick it off early if you grind enough in the item world and grind levels in the right maps. Something to consider is fighting level 99 enemies when available as they give the experience of a level 300 enemy.

First saw her in Disgaea 2, guy at the game store I go to recommended the game to me as I usually got a ton of RPGs there.
Immediately loved her design, and her attitude, as she's actually more or less a main character in the second game, she gets a lot of screentime and interaction. Played the crap out of that game, and after I finished it, immediately went back to the store to get the first game as well, which has most of the character development for her. Just came to like her more and more. I really like that there's actually a lot more to her personality than most people in Disgaea threads claim there to be.
Etna mode in the ports of the game was great too.
I have all the games she cameos in as well, including jp only ones. She gets a surprising amount of screentime in games like Cross Edge, pretty good. Though Trinity Universe was fucking terrible.

Yeah it was a lot of fun working with them, sadly I eventually got phased out by machine translations, but I understand since NISA's pretty small and they don't have a budget to pay so many translators for Europe.
I literally got the job because I wanted some Etna content in my country on PSN that they weren't providing, despite it being available in the UK, and asked them about it, and they said they had no translator for X country, and I was like "I have a Masters certificate" and that led to me getting the job.

I loathed how archaic Disgaea 1 Complete was.

I shortly found that out when I seen a 100% exp geo panel. The game is grindy and knows it.

Kind of feels disrespectful and a waste of time when they could have deflated the numbers a bit.

I know Fire Emblem is weak on the SRPG front, with Tactics Ogre being as clunky as Disgaea, but neither required the absurd amount of grinding.

The post game also had the absurdly inflated numbers which also on top of character level required items levels. Little in the skills of the characters helps mitigate the level disparity.
