I like it if your able to use your pistol in tandem with your automatic weapon like in Max Payne 3 where you could have an auto-pistol in one hand and a semi-automatic in the other.

The only real downsides automatic weapons can have over pistols would all be incredibly unfun to deal with if they were implemented into gameplay.
> Heavier weight could translate to slower aim, slower draw, slower reload
> Rarer ammo just turns people into hoarders
> Unless you count revolvers as pistols, automatic weapons are likely to be higher caliber and therefore higher damage
It would be neat to see the advantages of pistols epitomized, but from a gameplay perspective, it's just too hard.
