Honestly Xenogears is just Evangelion but actually good.

Eva would have been the fucking best shit if it didn't go off the rails because all the budget issues and depressed staff

They're both great

To me, outside of music and animation, Evangelion really shines in it's characters. In that area I think Xenogears falls short by comparison, though Fei is a 10/10 protag and some of the other characters are still good as well.
I will agree that Xenogears uses its technobabble and philosophical talk better, as certain aspects of it pertain more directly to the story compared to Eva.

Xenogears is unfinished and it could have been a lot better. It's hollow in comparison to Eva. Panzer Dragoon Saga is a much closer analogue.

Eva objectively has god tier animation and music, as well as a great cast of characters. What you think of the rest is a matter of opinion but I still think it's all around great.

There is a super robot wars game where you literally stop third impact. It’s pretty much exactly the feel you want.

I'm a fan of the series but... you sure about that? surely I'm not the only one who noticed the huge stretches with no animation at the end. and the fact that the last two episodes consisted almost entirely of stills

zwei was announced when the first was announced. So far the first doesn't look very good but they have time to improve.

Budget was never a problem with eva, time was however. A lot of things had to be redone shortly before airing which is never a good thing. That said the ending was 100% intentional.

I was thinking about playing it anyway and it has been described to me as "not unlike eva".

It didn't run off budget
Sarin gas attacks in tokyo was almost identical to an episode they had finished already, so they had to scrap it and work overtime to make a new episode to replace it
that didn't work
so they basically just skipped the sarin gas like episode and split an episode in 2, 25 and 26 were supposed to be just one episode
Also, Anno being depressed is what made the show good
If Nadia had sold well, Eva would be just another Gandam clone with the shitty twist that the mechs are not robots
Go read their design documents, prototype eva was going to be just a generic robot anime like Red Baron

ZoE games are great, but they're much too short and action-heavy to be properly reminiscent of EVA. The scale and cosmic happenings are there though. The best girl is also a redhead, as well. Play the original game before playing 2nd Runner though, since that's a direct sequel and basically finishes the story from the first one.
