>vita >b-but it beat wiiU so it is not a failure!!! What a retard. Let's analyze this honestly. >PSX/PS2 true winners and successful. No doubts on these. >PS3 Big loser, but by the end of its lifetime it had some solid exclusives so I'd say it still lost to xbox and wii but it was a worthy console >ps4 winner, but the generation it was in was shit so it is not a big accomplishment. Also >100 million that's an asspull >psp still lost to both gba and DS. And was shit when it came to games, only redemption was being an emulation machine.
mainly niggers. people educated on games would jump on nintendo and xbox exclusives, while ps2 had heaps of madden, barbie, and jrpg trash
Matthew Richardson
PS1. Because discs were cheap and because of high storage memory. PS2. Because it was the best DVD player on the market, in combination with the above giving it the most games. PS3. Because it genuinely had the best hardware of the console industry it was eventually able to overcome its abysmal launch. PS4. Because its competition shat the bed, and apparently westerners felt like they needed to "upgrade" even though the PS4 offered nothing the PS3 didn't already offer.
The Vita isn't a success and the Wii U bombing doesn't make the Vita a success.

PS3 was an absolute joke for the first half of its lifespan. However things really turned around for it later on, after price cuts made the thing affordable, and after devs started releasing worthwhile games after they finally figured out how that cell processor bullshit worked. PS3 benefited from Generation 7 lasting an unusually long amount of time. Early adopters got fucked for years, later adopters got the best experience.
For PS4, there's absolutely nothing special about it. The reason it dominates over Xbone is simply because MS royally fucked up with Xbone. The thing was initially an extra 100 dollars more expensive because of mandatory kinect, nobody wanted kinect because it was this weird mandatory spyware constantly watching you, they weren't going to let you play any used games, it was going to require an always-on internet connection, and the CEO even told people to "fuck off and stick with 360" if they don't like any of this. PS4 didn't really win, it's just that Xbone shot itself in the foot and PS4 gained as a result.

when sony jumped in everyone immediately expected them to be the king of the market because sony was the almighty king of electronics. like its hard for kids to see how it was back then but sony was like coke and pepsi and everything else was like walmart brand cola. stereos, tvs, you name it. sony made exactly what everyone wanted with the ps1 and everyone knew ahead of time that they would. ps2 was the most anticipated new console and it didnt disappoint by being a next gen console and a dvd player in one package. you saved over a hundred dollars buying a ps2 instead of a dreamcast AND a dvd player.
then sony started to slip. youll notice a big drop after the ps2, because sony thought they would try and take the processor market by storm with the new cell, and the ps3 would be the bottle they would christen it with. they got cocky, the 360 was ahead for years (probably ended up ahead too, most people get their "SONY WON IN THE END" info from vgchartz lol) because it got better ports, ps3 lost would-be exclusives to the 360, and lost would-be multiplats to the pain in the ass console. and when they cut the price and worked closer with devs it was to keep the ps brand alive, not turn a profit. they continued to lose money on ps3 until the ps4. ps4 was exactly what people wanted, a successor the the xbox 360 that didnt shoot itself in the foot, stomach, and face during its initial reveal like the xbox one.
as for handhelds psp was huge worldwide until people realized that the amount of noteworthy non-pirated software for the thing was piddling. and as such only the always-mobile japs bought the ps vita. and less so than the psp for even them, because mobile took hold of a lot of japs when it got big.
TLDR; it didnt grow into a major gaming force, it started out as one before even releasing the ps1, and has struggled to maintain since.

They haven't really had any competition. Only children and manchildren buy Nintendo products, and they're mostly dying out as shown by how completely desperately Nintendo's been trying to stay relevant in this day and age, not having any real success since the N64.
And Xbox is just Xbox. it's there, but who even gives a shit.

Will there ever be a console as successful as the ps2 ever again? How in the living fuck did they do this? What made me truly realize this was insane, is when I thought the Wii OUTSOLD PS2, but PS2 beat it by miles. Was this because it came out at a perfect time of DVD's and people were also using it as a gaming platform and DVD player? What made the ps2 so iconic that it did -literal- bombing runs on all the competition?
It was exactly because of its timing as a cheap, reliable DVD player.
Gavin Jenkins
Really? I'm glad about it since I prefer PS above xbox, even tough I know that xbox was better in terms of specs. Still they both lost to wii when it comes to sales. About the games, most people only notice the casual games, but wii had some really good games that makes the choice really hard for me when it comes to choose if I prefer wii or ps3. Ps3 has persona, rdr, catherine, dragon's crown, but wii has metroid, muramasa, zelda, the last story.
Good fucking games, the only thing the west had over nips were CRPGs

If we're talking about the psx and ps2 >affordable >plays other optical media >cheap licensing fees for developers >good launch line up >aesthetic in design >long lifespan >the latter was supported and repaired by sony until 2014

>PS3 sold more than 360 When is this retarded meme going to end? I see this spouted constantly and yet a 10 second google search will yield results proving that 360 eclipsed PS3 by several million. The 360 was the better console -- it had better exclusives, actual playable multiplats, a better controller, better multimedia features, better online, better price point, better everything. PS3 was, is and will always be a steaming dog turd that was only good for Demon's Souls.

literally just look at the wikipedia page for both consoles you retarded ape
PSX: N64 was a joke with a terrible controller PS2: Millions of people bought it as a DVD player without ever playing games on it PS3: Huge failure, literally the biggest single failure in the entire industries history PS4: Xbox and Nintendo fumbled at the starting line PSP: Sold due to easy piracy. It got good hardware sales but software sales tanked Vita: Huge failure
John Gomez

>Gears, Halo, Fable, Banjo, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Culdcept Saga, Tales of Vesperia, Dead Rising, Alan Wake, Forza, Viva Pinata, tons of console exclusives from PC like Dark Messiah, Left 4 Dead, etc >vs. Demon's Souls, LBP, Uncharted and Killzone, both of which were objectively trash movie games
Jonathan Flores
Outselling doesnt mean anything when you do so at a massive loss. Microsoft could start selling the Xbone for $50 at a $350 loss and they would sell the most consoles but it would be a hollow victory. The ps3s sales numbers need to be taken with that context. For how much of a loss they took on that console it's actually horrifically pathetic how little they sold.
Jaxon Miller
PS1: By NOT being completely retarded like Nintendo and SEGA. PS2: By again, NOT being completely retarded like Nintendo. SEGA had already collapsed on itself thanks to its blunders in the 4th/5th gen, and XBox had fuck all other than Halo and JSRF. It had the superior multiplats, but was hueg so no one cared. PS3: The fuck you talking about it lost this one. The Wii utterly BTFO the PS3 in terms of sales, and even the RROD machine was more powerful in terms of specs, or at least had the better multiplats. PS4: Because Nintendo and Microsoft once again shat the bed. Nintendo did so bad that they had to sweep the Wii U under the rug and release the Switch mid-gen, which is probably going to fuck them in the ass once the 9th gen consoles release. PSP: Superior to the DS by a wide margin, but only sold because of piracy. UMD was a really stupid idea in hindsight, and it didn't help that game carts similar to the Vita/Switch would've been expensive as fuck back then. Vita: Again, the fuck are you smoking if you think the Vita was a success? The Vita did 3 things right and 100 things wrong.
Michael Parker
PS games were cheaper than others on the market, plus having a good library over time making it popular
PS2 came with a DVD player in the era where DVDs were replacing VHS, and it had an expansive library over time making it popular
PS3 was a disaster for half of it's lifespan. It was expensive. It pushed Blu Ray in a time where people either still trying to cling to DVD, or were not sure if HD-DVD would be popular. It was a era of multiplatform game popularity, and everyone had already adopted Xbox360 for console multiplayer games.
PS4 came out at the right time for it to be successful. Microsoft shit the bed with the XBox One launch, and the large group who played XBox for the Multiplat games, and online console games jumped ship to the PS4. That audience makes up for the majority of PS4 sales. (Nintendo bungled the Wii U as well, but I don't think there was much crossover between those bases)
PSP was successful, but not nearly as much as the DS, for the same reasons Vita did okay, but not nearly as good as the 3DS. Nintendo's handhelds had a lower barrier of entry, despite the slow start of the 3DS.
The 360 did. 360 E model was released a year prior to wikipedia's 2014 cutoff for sales numbers. It sold more than 3m in that time easily. The PS3 lost, sorry little guy. No actually it got discontinued in mid 2016. Try again.

Sony is the best Platform Holder of all time. It's that simple, there is no other excuse or possible justification. Many new companies tried to get into the market, nearly all instantly fail and don't even last a single gen, like Panasonic. Very few last a couple+ gens before turning into a 3rd party publishers, like Sega and Microsoft. Only Nintendo and Sony have ever lasted as long as they have, and out of the two Sony is the only consistent one, with all but 1 system surpassing 100m units per gen (and PS3 was only ~17m away from that). Sony managed to create a record for homeconsole sales with their very first time WHILE dethroning Nintendo at their absolute homeconsole/populaliry/monopoly peak (right after NES/SNES/GB era)
Hudson Myers
Not going to read the thread so someone with half a braincell probably already said it, but they started entirely due to Nintendo's bad business practices. When you dominate the market, you can be shit to developers. Nintendo had a lot of crazy demands. Sony did not and would go on to also bankroll a bunch of developers so they went to Sony's side. They then also helped to embrace games not just targeted at everyone. A lot of the more "hardcore" audience saw games they could play nowhere else there, as well as a glut of interesting smaller-scale Japanese titles due to lower licensing costs. This would follow through the PS2 where it had a lot of interesting titles because Sony was simply easier to work with and the market share was good (cycle of success).
However, as videogames grew and Sony remained large, they fell to some of the same business practices Nintendo had in the past (censorship to remain "safe" for everyone) and are now largely floated by casual players, doubly so now that PC is a much better platform to game on.
They still do well today
Henry Cook
Good post
Still, Sony is the default platform for many people, not everyone is a PC gamer and Sony has developed several high quality games
Landon Brooks
I am looking at the numbers and PS3 was a technically superior machine with low incidence rate. It was a better multimedia machine with the best bluray player on the market for half the price of a bluray only player, free online, more and better exclusives that were of higher quality than anything on Xbox. The console also sold more and that's just raw stats without even talking about the rampant RROD issue. That's reality.
Oliver Morgan
>PSX - FF7 Shamefur, PSX had amazing games coming out each month. FF7 was just one of them.
