I was mainly a consolefag (especially Playstation) my whole life and building even a measly low/mid-tier PC recently has almost fully convinced me of ditching consoles in the future.

Nintendo is always the last priority of multiplats/ports. Always. If not straight up outsourced completely to a seperate company while the main company focuses 100% attention on PC/consoles. Look at Mortal Kombat for example. NRS did the pc/console version and the switch version outsourced to a company thats only made one game before.

This happens for 9 out of 10 multiplat/ports on switch. It's because we all know and 3rd parties know that Nintendo games sell good on Nintendo systems and it's pretty hard for any other game not Mario or Zelda to sell well.

As for indie games. They often decide to optimise for switch AFTER release IF the game sells well enough. Look at Dead Cells. The game sold quite well despite running like shit and the Devs decided to actually optimise the game from unstable 30fps to 60fps with a patch that came later. And Bloodstained on Switch literally launched as version 0.8 on the cart. Literally unfinished. Then they announced they will put all their focus on optimising the game after it released. We're still waiting.

Yes the hardwares weaker. It's a handheld that's to be expected. There's going to be compromises. But when you combine that together with the lackluster approach to developing for the system because you assume sales will be lukewarm on top of that then what you get is a badly performing game.

Microsoft got an in house studio to port cuphead. It runs 1080p60fps. Blizzard put a ton of effort into Diablo 3 in studio port and it runs 1080p60fps too. It's not a coincidence. Most studios won't put the time, money and effort into that kinda quality though unless it's a guaranteed hit for the system.

One last thing is that the Switch is actually also tuned down. Nintendo have downclocked the speeds on the CPU and GPU and even the ram of the system.

If you hack your system you can easily overclock every game on the system and it runs every game better. You can almost guarantee that a simple slight overclock would stop this game from dropping below 60fps. But it's Nintendo who chose to only give developers and consumers access to 1.0ghz of cpu when it actually has 1.8ghz on board.

The switch is more than capable of running pretty much every game that actually performs badly on it but for a myriad of reasons be it lack of optimisation, lack of experience, just not having access to the full juice of the system the games often turn out less than ideal.

To be fair, Doom on Switch has gyro controls while the inferior consoleplebs have to do with stick aiming in a shooter.

It has active cooling so it can push itself quite a bit harder than Shield.

I max overclock my switch all the time. It honestly doesn't get too hot. The battery drain is pretty major but it should be the consumers choice whether they want to play at a lower res/performance with longer battery or higher performance with lower battery life's.

Also battery is irrelevant when it's docked. When docked the system is still significantly underclocked.

The switch having better hardware would be nice and all, but how you program something has a huge effect on performance. Even basic bitch shit like code to copy and paste a bunch of cells in excel is going to run real slow on a high end PC if you try and literally copy and paste each individual cell one at a time compared to copying the values to memory and writing them in bulk.

Its most likely a problem of the weaker hardware requiring more time and resources than the budget / release date / publisher will allow. You can’t really pin the full blame on just the hardware or the devs.

I can play on lunch, when I am bored at work in-between actually doing shit, or when I am traveling for work (Planes and in hotels). For me the sacrifice on performance and graphics is worth it to be able to play period.

Devs never like working on less powerful hardware than they're used to. It's purely a chore when the game was originally designed to work on much better hardware. There's no creativity at all and it's basically a cleaning out of assets and features until you get a stable run out of a game. It's the opposite of what's enjoyable in game development.

I got SDV to run flawlessly on a family studio PC from 2006 a couple years ago. It doesn't even have to be a very good PC to run it. Hell, it's not supposed to support windows XP but it does. Of course you can't mod it on XP, or at least I tried and no matter what I did it wouldn't work since I think SMAPI uses some features of windows 7 and up that XP simply doesn't have.

Games are entertainment and some entertainment can be considered art.
If a game has a clear and distinguished style like Hollow Knight i can say that i would certify some pieces of the game as "art" but it all boils down to the question "is it fun to play". Therefore i think that gameplay, satisfaction and fun are the most important aspects of games.

Some games can also present philosophical questions or have deeper hidden meanings that it's trying to get across which i would consider borderline art as well. Sort of like an artist painting to express their opinions or beliefs in something, Just my two cents.
