Coming as someone that's played all of them since the release of Drakengard 2, then went back to play the first, no. Fuck no. Don't waste your time. The first game is one of the worst action titles in existence, the second is just as bad, and the third runs at 5fps and also has some horrible gameplay. You are better off playing Panzer Dragoon while listening to the cutscenes on youtube. If you must play another Yoko Taro game, suffer through the og Nier and call it a day. Automata's success is driven purely by Platinum - Cavia and Yoko Taro couldn't design a decent game without them.

Drakengard 1 is one of the craziest games I've ever played and has a lot of good shit going for it despite having the worse base for a musou game I've ever seen. The lack of mobility makes the game feel painfully slow and some enemies are walking hp bars, but there are ways to circumvent this. I've never played anything that feels more bleak and insane on an atmospheric level, and everything from the grueling gameplay to intentionally schizophrenic music adds to this crushing experience. The baldness of the game is also overblown.

3 is a completely different style and I personally think it's more annoying than the fucking first DoD to play somehow, without any of the positives like a notably interesting narrative, unique atmosphere, or sympathetic characters.
It's got a great style of sexual humor, but I never actually gave a shit about anything that was happening, and I blame a poor balance in tone.

Nier is just fucking great. Maybe a little simple but the presentation for magic is still one of the coolest I've seen in a game.

I highly recommend a spoiler free weapon guide for DoD1, and the quest guide image macro for Nier. Personally I don't think DoD3 is even remotely worth playing.

Another user here, let me defend DoD3 by its soundtrack. The boss tracks are absolutely phenomenal, and ending D is fantastic. Having suffered through the game I can play it through again due to the soundtrack alone.
Route A was a drag tho, it got better from there.

I can't believe I forgot the visual similarities between what I assume to be an active machine core (the balls of light at the tops of resource collectors, that fly around during Eve's rampage) and the souls from drakengard, a lot of implications there.
