Every game's story is self-contained so you dont need to play the earlier games, but its still good to play in order to appreciate the series evolutionn but mainly so you dont miss some conveniences the later games have that are missing in the earlier ones
If 6 really doesnt grab you after a while, you should give 7 and 8 a quick try to see if they'd appeal to you more

6 is buttugly even for Touhou standards, I don't blame you. 4 and 5 on PC98 manage to sound and look better and they're better games too but that's like, my opinion, man. LLS' pretty easy even on Lunatic, you can try and give it a go too if you really can't stand EoSD.
