Therre were academic circles of poets like in greece, etc.

Even if you take Cortes's numbers for Aztec sacrifices at face value, 3000 a year, that's still only around as many sacrifices for 100 years as single religious purges like the genocide of the cathars in france, which killed at least that many in only 1/5th the time. Not to mention that most sacrifices were enemy soldiers, etc.

Also Mexico is a large country, there's red zones where you shouldn't visit, and zones that a perfect for tourism as long as stick to using uber and avoiding isolated areas or being late at night in poor places. The largest cities hold a wide contrast having places that are comparable to Dallas or Houston and having literal Favelas just a few km away.
