Keeping units adjacent to one another will increase their bonds and offer many kinds of benefits. The combat is reasonably deep, offering a lot of versatility, but nothing that would be overwhelming for new players. There's a big focus on out-of-battle character and relationship building too. Give it a try. You'll like it.

In the regard that we'll never get a sequel which explicitly frames a pairing as a hard fact, but Sumia's the obviously intended pairing in the same regards that Revelation is clearly meant to be the finale of Fates when all three routes do tell a complete if dogshit story.
It's not as if I particularly like the pairing but the story and mechanics both push them together. Any other pairing is in the air but the biggest distinction is that Chrom is defaulted to Sumia putting aside everything else.
