I only played one pokemon game and haven’t followed what the new one does, but there’s nothing intrinsically bad about cutting pokemon when there’s fucking 800 or so of them. They’re not all good, they can’t all be used in a game. I guarantee there’s multiple of them that not a single fucking person uses ever.
Cutting shit that doesn’t contribute to the game is not only a smart, it’s necessary.

One of the last bastions of split screen co-op (and even LAN). Fun action game and there's actually plenty of content for a single player campaign, especially compared to today's games that milk you dry with DLC if they're non-open world and have nothing to artificially extend the playtime

The trouble with this argument is that brand loyalty is not always the sole cause of a game's criticism. Sticker Star has a bad presentation in addition to not being faithful. Mario Party 9 is painful to play due to how dumbed down it feels on top of having unfaithful game mechanics.
I believe games only deserve this pass if their gameplay is well-refined in spite of it's disloyalty. The only examples I can think of that do are Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Kirby's Epic Yarn, two great platformers hindered by their branding.

Most people agree that a culling would've been fine if the series actually got a real upgrade in polish and possibly balance. The problem is, it hasn't gotten better. Animations and models are still reused from the 3DS for returning Pokémon. Worse, GameFreak LIED about these things being improved as a trade off.

People have already compared the geometry of Pokémon we've seen up close in SwSh footage to 3DS/LGPE models. They did get new TEXTURES, but that's not the same thing as a model, and some people are suggesting that the interview may have included textures when they said they're making "new models", which is still just as sneaky to say.

Maybe actually research your shit before you jump in and cry at critics. Fuck sake, I don't play Pokémon anymore and I did my due diligence to know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Sticker Star, even on its own merits, is trash. The threadbare story and world is embarrassing even for a Nintendo-made RPG and, more pressingly on "muh own merits" criteria, the battle system is a broken backwards joke and a pointless mess 90% of the time outside of boss battles.
