Every game since Demon's Souls has been a refinement of its formula. You could argue that Demon's was a refinement of King's Field but it's far more divergent than any of its sequels. The only things DS1 did was refine Demon's Souls a bit, slap on a tedious open world meme to appeal to normalfags more, and ruin the multiplayer system beyond repair.

Except DS1 isn't really an open world, it's a bunch of linear levels with some random paths to other levels in it. And the cost was all the levels having garbage design compared to the levels in Demon's Souls.

That sounds like open world to me, and it's what I prefer to what games claim to be open world where you are surrounded by trees 90% of the time. Which sadly is concerning to me at least because Miyazaki said for Elden Ring they are going for a more traditional open world design. I do wish there was less cutscene transitions in DS1 such as going to Anor Londo, the Kiln, Abyss, etc but I was still impressed with their world design.
