Because they erased their memories (like commie countries do by doing some genocide cleanup), they didn't learn from their past mistakes so history was repeated.

I do think that Earthbound's writing is far superior though. It wasn't hamfisted, the world felt much more unique and well thought out, and it retained the core message while remaining a humorous, magical children's story. I hate how long it took to get to the game proper. I hated dicking around with different characters.
I hated how so many of the enemies were just combined animals.
It wasn't funny or interesting, but I guess that's a result of translation, rather than localization.
I didn't cry. I don't even know what I was supposed to cry about.
I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I liked Earthbound.

I appreciate how the characters all played differently, but I don't like doing something if I know it doesn't mater. I can't help but know that Lucas is the main character from other media, so the whole thing just felt like a chore before getting to him.
I also didn't like how it take forever for the main quest to start. In Earthbound, it takes around ten minutes for the game to get to the point.

Fassad is a good representation of that theme, but the chimera lab is where this game really becomes Kino. They are almost literally talking about how we are goddamn seconds from using CRISPR and gene drivers to finger-diddle one of the most complex and intricate systems humans have ever encountered.

You fucking rube, I'm saying the themes this series explores are far grander than the political squabbles we obsess over. This is a story about cosmic forces and the struggle between the industrialized technocratic will of man, vs a natural life pursuing happiness and harmony. The land of Mother 3 exists in a space where human politics are no longer relevant, everyone was either killed, or is about to be killed by Porky because he has obtained powers beyond human comprehension. The environmental theme isn't about preserving forests by cutting down pollution, it's showing how our capacities as a species are growing so absurd that we are like idiot children trying to blow up the entire planet to please our sense of ego. Porky burning down the forests and corrupting the wildlife with genetic manipulation is about the theme of how he is uprooting everything we thought we valued about being human in the pursuit of power. He has ruthlessly destroyed more than any dictator, but at his heart, he is still just an angsty child acting out because his parents didn't love him. Porky is like a critique of the nature our direction as a society is taking in the most general sense, that we are tyrants using powers we cannot fathom to pursue idiotic and childish impulses.
