However, while this was the case sometimes, it wasn't always so.
The most famous historical example of this is the relationship between Oda Nobunaga and Mori Ranmaru.
Ranmaru was not only considered stunningly beautiful (not in modern standards, he wasn't a trap, he was actually much more manly than most people in this board would be confortable with), but also an incredibly skilled and deadly swordman.
He was his master apprentice, lover and protector all in one.
His relationship with Nobunaga ran so deep and was so intensely pure and genuine that when Nobunaga ritualistically killed himself, he helped him one final time by cutting his head off.
And then committing seppuku next to his lord, to be faithful to him even in death.

There were cases of violence and of this role being forcefully imposed upon young males, however the ideal execution of this tradition was for a lord to have a lover and an apprentice that could truly appreciate and understand them.
Not to force, but to create a genuine, lifelong relationship, that ran much deeper than any relationship with a woman.

It is amazing to me that, out of the vast plethora of civilizations that have come to define world cultures, the traditional Judeo-Christian values have stuck the most, despite the fact that many nations have more tangible lineages to either their own local traditions, or overarching empires (Such as the spread of the Graeco-Roman culture throughout the Roman Empire, or the diffusion and cultural impact of the Chinese Dynasties throughout much of Asia Proper.) While there certainly might have existed homosexual relations between a Knight and his squire (and perhaps even between other Knights -- they were typically separated from women for great lengths of time), it is fascinating to see that, where only one thousand years prior the very same relationship would have undoubtedly had some form of homosexual experimentation, now the relation is seen as purely professional - anything more was sinful and improper. Perhaps it was with the rise of industrialization, and the end of the typical mentor-apprentice model in the western world, that homosexuality became further expunged from society, having lost the one primary justification for it's existence within a given culture. Of course, human sexuality being what it is, it would undoubtedly continue to exist in some form or another; just hidden from the records of history, condemning future historians to only ponder about the subject.
It is interesting to me that the societal acceptance for homosexuality is seemingly on the rise, as there has been no corresponding societal role that homosexuality fills.
