Eh it has shitty balance, pathfinding, and some pretty ahistorical elements. It's still perfectly playable and fun like most total wars.
My issue with it is that it's fanbase is the worst out of all of them. So many of them are just shitposters that want to turn every total war thread into an OLD GAME GOOD NEW GAME BAD shitfest.

I'd probably just start in on R2 unless you're okay with throwbacks, in which case R1 is solid. Start with an easy faction like Rome and buy a mix of units. Horsies hate spears, arrows hate horsies, light units hate arrows, it's all sort of intuitive how one unit is liable to fair against another. At least play until you get to fighting full stacks of decent units. If it's still not clicking, it's probably not going to.

Yeah, but Medieval 2 might actually be the best game in the series. It's certainly the pinnacle of oldTotal War style. Shogun 2 is quite a bit different after you play Rome and Medieval 2.
Shogun 2 is based though. I like lots of TW games for different reasons.
