That's honestly a good way to approach it since it's a character you'll be learning the game with.

Just make sure you really like them as playing them will encourage to keep sticking with the game.

Is there some privacy setting Merk's account could have had set that causes your party audio to not be heard in others' streams?

I don't know jack shit about fighting games, I used to play a bit of USFIV years ago but I only played Dudley and wasn't super into the game

Just thinking about what I look for in characters in other multiplayer games, I think I like having options more than executing a single, specific gameplan. Also I think I like characters that hit harder rather than characters that hit a ton. That was one reason I didn't really like how Byakuya felt.

When I played through up to 3-1 for all characters initially, my thoughts where that Hyde felt straightforward but boring, Eltnum felt "off", Merkava seemed interesting and kind of silly, and Gordeau also felt "off"

Ya never know. Maybe we get something as fun as Sengoku Basara Season 1.

If we're strictly speaking anime fighters, nothing comes to mind unless you count GG's story mode which has some animated parts here and there.

SNK had a company put out some 3D KoF stuff though IIRC in recent years didn't they?

hyde is straight forward but he can confirm off damn near everything, same with eltnum but it's harder and more rewarding. merk is fun, but with gord it might take a bit to get a handle of his tools. I guess just stick with trying to find someone fun.

I'd argue Gord is a lot more easier to convert into basics stuff with Hyde since the latter has rekka delays and Gord's Mortal Slide string is nowhere near as strict

I said get a handle on his tools, not convert. Hyde's basic shoto shit + rekka is much easier to wrap your head around compared to gord j.214x and less intuitive normals.

Also I fought a netplay Enkidu the other day that followed up blocked 5[C] with FF and it got me every time so if you ever come across that issue I'd suggest trying it.

5[C] is a pretty darn useful overhead as well at 6[C].

Force Function (B+C). It's his kicking DP or spinning bird kick I guess you could say. Allows you to follow up with divekick in the air and setup for 2B sweep into other combo stuff (I usually go for A rekka since it carries to corner pretty well).
