Gender studies is better

Depends on nationality, socioeconomic background, mental health, means & motivation, dickhead.
Who are you and what are asking when you say good idea?

Then there are better ideas especially if you are going to do a version of CS. You still need to answer those other points user, I know it is hard but making decisions for your future requires a whole lot of introspection and probably a lot of failure too.

Unironically this. Video game industry is awful unless you’re a gaming genius/prodigy that will revolutionize the industry in which case you don’t need the education

Horrible idea. Go CS or CPE or don't go at all.

>is going to college for video game design a good idea?

ONLY if you're there to make connections and get in touch with people wanting to work in the industry.

You will learn nothing valuable from the actual classes, nothing. And what you learn also mean nothing on your resume. Everyone working in the industry does so either due to insane talent or inside connections.

If you go there any don't immediately start job hunting and showing off your worth, forget about it.

no go to the military for video game design

THEY DO NOT WANT PEOPLE WITH GAME DESIGN MAJORS

THEY WANT PEOPLE WITH PROGRAMMING SKILLS

THEY DO NOT WANT PEOPLE WITH GAME DESIGN MAJORS

THEY WANT PEOPLE WHO KNOW HOW TO DESIGN LEVELS

THEY DO NOT WANT GAME DESIGN JACK OF ALL TRADES FAGGOTS

THEY WANT WRITERS, CODERS, AUDIOPHILES, ETC. STOP ASKING THIS QUESTION, IT HAS BEEN ANSWERED A MILLION TIMES BEFORE. GOING TO COLLEGE FOR "GAME DESIGN" IS ABOUT AS BAD AS MAJORING IN GENDER STUDIES

if you live in a developed country then yes, go for it and ignore these bitter faggots
t. third-worlder with video game dreams

Money isn't what you get for hard work, its what you get for providing unique value. You'd be competing with all the other gamers who went in it for their passion and just end up a wageslave that works long hours for shit pay.

>is going to college for video game design a good idea?
No. Also working in the game industry is just going to make you hate videogames. Keep them as a hobby.

Attached: 1424652683291.png (413x374, 199K)

Absolutely not. If you want to work for vidya then its better to be a adminstrator and run a vidya company.

People dont actually like being developers and programmers. The real ones are just twitching autists they put in front of a keyboard and a game comes out.

Not OP, but seriosuly fuck yo guys. Game design is my dream, I love gaming with my entire heart and I want to be part of creating that joy. I don't care if it doesn't pay good, I just want to do what I love, and you faggots are ruining.

Attached: 1558372260065.jpg (616x347, 119K)

I can say with absolute certainty: no. You can literally start making video games with no prior knowledge or classes or even a great computer right at home with online tutorials. Start small, work on your skills, build a reputation and then you can start working on real big games.

Small studios want game design majors.

If your company doesn't have 50 employees, it's very helpful to have a jack of all trades.

Even if you make it and somehow manage to get a job on a big studio you are gonna end up working 100 hours a week with a 40 hours a week salary censoring shit to appease retards on twitter while Bobby Kotick fucks your daughter in a private sex party so why even bother?

>writers

If they did they would have actually hired one by now.

don't turn your hobby into a job, you aren't going to get to make games you want to make anyway unless you are an indie dev

learning how to suck dick really good and take in big pozzed cocks is better

>he fell for the dream career meme

Find a job that you don't hate, pays well, and gives you a lot of freedom. Follow dreams on your off time.

you should learn how to program or make 3d models. from your wording I bet you are pretty young, probably around 16, so you have time to learn all of that

Total waste of money. Better idea would be to teach yourself whatever aspect of video game design you want to learn and join a mod team or amateur game project to gain experience.

>I don't care if it doesn't pay good
thats what OP is basically asking about, we are just answering him, thats all.

>How to tell somebody gave upon their dreams.
Retard.

Is going to college even really a smart idea anymore? Seems like a scam, I feel like I learned jack shit in college or at least shit I could have learned for free.

>I just want to do what I love
The industry sucks and it's just going to turn love into hate. It's happened to many people before and it's going to keep happening in the future, if not get even worse. Sorry reality is a bitch.

Did I ever say you shouldn't follow dreams? Having goals in life is great, but capitalism doesn't really care about your goals, care about them yourself.

What do you even "learn" in a Video Game design class?

Why are those owl birbs just chilling in an upright position

it doesnt matter if it pays good or not, there are better degrees to pursue that same career path

I know the industry sucks and the developers are overworked, I was hoping I could just power through since I love gaming and from the experience of graphic design and coding I have, I loved that s well. And seeing the hard work pay off in a finished product would be amazing. But I guess that's a stupid idea, huh? You guys are right. Reality sucks.

>video game design
I guarantee you already know good game DESIGN. You should focus on tackling the programming and art instead.

they are baby barn owls that shrivel when spooked.
Makes them scare off predators when they look like ayy lmaos

You learn fuck all in college. But a lot of jobs look at you funny if you don’t have a degree. It’s essentially mandatory at this point.

Pronouns, HRT, minority quotas, the usual.
You might even get a job on Google.

It's your dream but if you don't want your dreams crushed, pick up a specialized skill for Vidya.

You can go the way of Toby and make your own game if you're a multitalented individual, but most everyone isn't. So if you want to work in an industry that undoubtedly provides the worst quality of life for the amount of pay / hours work you should pick up programming or something else that's transferable. Following your dreams is great and it should be what you do instead of being a jaded faggot who dropped everything for cash.

Just don't let your dream blind you.

Don’t listen to Yea Forums. It’s a great path. I’m graduating in videogame design next year from full sail university and my advisor said I should easily find a job that starts at 150k+ right after graduation. The market is flooded with programmers but is lacking creative directors so I’m in a good position.

i'm not american but i'd assume the smartest thing to do is skip college and teach yourself a skill like programming, then get your first job through nepotism, then present yourself as a self-made man at later jobs and show that you can do the work by showing your work experience

No. Stay far away from video games.

I'm in the same boat, that's why I'm investing over 90 percent of my money so I can become a producer one day.

Yes reality does suck. Jesus kid grow the fuck up.

oh man

Attached: 1562455129179.png (469x443, 275K)

If you want to. Seriously just do whatever you want, you're going to fucking DIE one day anyways. What's the worst that could happen? Death is the only scary thing in the world. Just fucking go to school for video games who the fuck cares.

Google is actually very easy to get hired with if you actually know how to code, it seems 60% of people there don't actually know how to do anything and mostly diversity hires for financial incentives. My Huwhite polish friend was doing most of the work there for the Australian branch, now imagine what the American ones are like.

Not him, but dreams are too specific to be something you base your entire life around. You're better off figuring out what kind of passions lead you to having said dream (e.g. you wanted to become an astronaut because you like astronomy or like to explore), and then following those instead.

Much wider area of opportunity and you're more likely to become satisfied in life.

>My advisor said
>Full sail University
>150k a year for idea guy

Man, I made that dumbass mistake before when I signed my enlistment contract.

hey everybody look at this meme

Attached: 1556758334204.jpg (300x300, 28K)

I have a friend who is in game design and 100% believes he is going to get a full time job enjoy being a dishwasher my good pal

Absolutely nothing. I once took a game design class as an easy elective and almost every assignment was just coming up with ideas or describing a potential mechanic for something.

Pretty much an idea guy's wet dream.

>Look at you funny
Yeah, but they're STILL going to waste money trying to teach you the basic run down on what to do.
Unless you're in a field where you need a fuck load of pre-contextual information most jobs end up teaching you all you need to do that job.

Why can't people just admit that getting hired is all about being friends with some fag already in it or sucking someones dick?

Just make a game and sell it on Patreon or Steam. There're at least a few game dev threads here every month and making a game when it's not your job, at your own pace, will make you less likely to hate your hobby.

Yeah that's what I was trying to imply. Special snowflake classes.

Well I mean it's been a lot of that since the beginning of human time.

When I got into my twenties it made me questioned the whole education system since I feel most subjects shouldn't be bothered with at all beyond being an elective.

Death is not scary nor should it be used to discredit the value of your life.
In fact, the fact that the days of your life are limited is what makes them valuable. Pretty sure most people figured this out by the time they graduated high school at the latest. OP's question is a valuable one. Death isn't scary to me but do you know what is? Wasting your life. I'm glad OP is asking questions like these to make sure he doesn't waste any of his precious time.
>What's the worst that could happen?
OP could end up in debt, having learned almost no valuable skills and having no job prospects.
>who the fuck cares
OP does. Thats why he's asking the question.

You kind of seem like you fucked up your life by making dumb decisions so now you pretend that life "doesnt matter hurr durr". In your case thats probably true. Cope harder.

but i don't want to work at McDonalds
.... and then get fired for my unreasonable treatment of customers.

Get a software development or computer science degree instead. You could still get into the industry with relative ease and on top of that you get paid more money with non video game related jobs with that sort of degree.

If you are very motivated sure yes it can be a great idea. But if you just want to secure your future and just do something you know. Well then no. Absolutley not. Not worth the risk. Or maybe yes if you're lucky.

underrated post

Hello future McDonalds/Walmart manager

>Wanting to get into the videogame industry

So you want shitty work conditions, loads of unpaid overtime, shitty pay for the hours you work, poor job security and to turn your hobby into what you hate?

Bad idea user, I've have graduated from game design college, they only teach basic shit for making low quality indie.
Like this user says, They only teach you basic jack of all trades skill. You are likelier to ends up hating certain subjects and liking other subjects more. You are better off learning a specialized subject you would enjoy doing then partner with others who specializes in different subjects

Attached: 1560494306887.jpg (720x611, 44K)

I want friends are into game design like me.
I want cute gamedev gf

>ONLY if you're there to make connections and get in touch with people wanting to work in the industry.

Here is the answer. Which is also true for just about every college major except medicine and the hard sciences.

There's way more than enough tutorials on youtube or even in textbooks to get you to an amateur dev level in a few months if you're serious.

If you think the investment will motivate you to study, just have a friend take 100 grand from you and tell him to light it on fire in a year if you don't produce at least a rough beta of whatever you're trying to achieve. Same risk but at least in this scenario you get the money back if you succeed instead of throwing at some bogus "game college" so they can put more 30 second ads on Adult Swim.

yes if you're going to a good school and work your ass off no if you are not.
Same as every field.

Unironically its not a bad course and field.

t. did game art and had my name in credits for AAA games before i left school and have been workign in AAA in my short 2 year long career

If you even had to ask then no, you'll get over it

you should skip college and just start working your way up in game industry now. a good place to start is GameStop.
