I'm not really sure how it is. I mean, there's a general criticism that modern MMOs lake the Massive feeling but that's less a criticism and more a reflection of the playerbase. XIV afford ample opportunities for large gatherings of people. What other games have as heavy a focus on the social aspect as FFXIV does? Not many.

This is what confuses people. FFXIV is mainly this, a single player game with some multiplayer in it, for most of the main story quest or campaign. You don't really engage in the massive or multiplayer part a great deal until the end game, but it isn't restricted to you until that point either. It's a question of how to navigate a community rather than the structure of the game.

I had entirely no problem with the feel of games like XV, XIII, X, and may as well throw in VIII as well. Final Fantasy has expanded its realm of experiences over the years in different directions that weren't all that unfamiliar in the more "traditional" Final Fantasy games. Sci-fi, modern, magical, and medieval elements are spread out in various amounts in each installment. I used to look forward to seeing which direction the next, new mainline Final Fantasy game would take. I don't much anymore because the last decade of Final Fantasy has basically been a clusterfuck on a lot of levels and while there may have been a day we'd all be hyped at the idea of a FF16, we're not even entirely sure there WILL be a FF16.

If, in fact, Yoshida's Development Division 3 is in charge of FF16 and started full development early this year, I'll be excited to hear about it in a year or two. I hope I'll be surprised and I hope they'll take Final Fantasy in a really interesting direction. But more than anything, I hope they'll finish their game. And while I would've doubted their competency, and for good reason, after everything that has gone wrong at SE the past decade or more, I think Shadowbringers has proven it is again possible for them to fully execute all their ideas in a complete package with all the dazzle and polish you'd expect from the best AAA games.

And it's kind of got my hopes up for FF7R and whatever the FFXV team is working on.

I have a friend who's been playing for a long time but he's never played healer in proper content despite having every job at 70 before ShB. He's not very good at the game even with jobs get uses a lot, but I thought it'd be fun to try anyway. We decided to try the level 71 dungeon with two randos and he gave me permission to try and do a full pull.

It failed spectacularly and he was so embarrassed that he left the dungeon immediately. I still feel bad about it. I just wanted to play with a friend and learn new jobs together.

Void Ark not so much, but the ones after are decent just for the raids themselves, especially the last one. You also get some stuff about the Great Magi War and Mhach itself.

It's nothing huge, but the sidequests in Shadowbringers are gearing up to bring the Void into the main picture so it's worth doing.

FF1's machines were great. The Lefain citizens were actually the original inhabitants of the floating fortress, cast out when Tiamat appeared and the machines went slowly went rogue since all the knowledge of their maintenance and programming was gradually lost. The floating fortress is the only place in the game that has robots (I think even the Temple of Fiends doesn't have any), and they thematically make sense to be there. Most of their attacks aren't spells but actual skills and suggest it's a mundane version of spellcasting (IE Nuclear is equal to NUKE). The only things stronger than them are a few monsters in the Temple of Fiends revisited, and even then Sentries still hit harder than most of them, and WarMECH puts everything to shame, even giving Chaos himself a run for his money.

And I kind of like that. You have these immensely powerful tools that could actually be considered a stronger threat than what the light warriors actually face, but knowledge of how they were controlled or used was lost to time, and while powerful enemies, don't do anything but follow their programming. They're a perfect backdrop in the game that keeps a sense of scale that even though the enemy you're fighting is dangerous enough to mess up the world, there's stuff even worse out there that thankfully is indifferent to you.

I just finished it two days ago. I liked how the world always felt big and like you were going on a journey, but holy shit the combat is so fucking BORING. Enemies just die in a couple hits or with an AOE magic attack. You spend so much time just traveling around searching for something to do while getting attacked by monsters every two feet.

FFXV just shoehorned fantasy shit into a lowish tech setting with none of the real weirdness VII or VIII had

I love Final Fantasy 15 and nothing makes me sadder than what happened to it. We saw it go from this super interesting teaser that slowly had it's identity stripped away from it, a completely different vision taking over, the story being chopped up and some of it didn't even get sold back to us. The episode ducase demo's fantastic gameplay could've salvaged it but the Japanese found pressing buttons too hard so they turned it into "hold 1, sometimes hold 2"

I love the cast, I love the remnants of the world and lore that could've been. I played and finished it on launch and decided I'd do another playthrough when all the patches and DLC came out, and months later I haven't done that because it depresses me too much. I was really looking forward to the second "bunch" of episodes because Lunafreya and Aranea desperately needed more characterisation and even Episode Noctis was exciting because it seemed like it was going to expand more on what happened during the timeskip, but Square seemed happier putting all of those eggs into the multiplayer basket that myself and everyone else I know had zero interest in getting into.

I was a latecomer to the Final Fantasy series and I just wish we could get something to bring back that greatness that launched this series in the first place.

The only complaint I have with XIV's MMO side is that it doesn't strive to be anything new, just the most streamlined WoW style MMO on the market. Job design is entirely focused on raiding first, though the team does do a good job of at least keeping the job themes as close to the source material as possible. That in itself isn't bad, it's just sort of bland, and I'd say some of the encounter design, the story, and the music/VA work carries the game to make it something more.

So I guess that is a true statement, it's not really a spectacular MMO in the sense that it's nothing new, just relatively well done in comparison to other MMOs.

The one in the waterfall actually fell from the castle carrying the CUBE, I don't remember what he says when you talk to him, only that the citizens of Onrac will tell you they saw something fall from the sky, mistaking it for a comet. But yeah, the Mirage Tower does have some of the lesser robots, GUARDs, so I guess they are in some other places. I don't consider it so out of place though considering the Mirage Tower has a large amount of computer equipment and was sealed by the CHIME anyway.

Did you play the original release or one of the remakes? Random encounters were a lot more dangerous and slow to deal with in the original version. You also couldn't use magic as a constant crutch because the magic system was loosely based on old-school D&D rules: You could choose only three spells of a given tier of magic on each character, and instead of having MP you got a number of uses per tier that required sleeping to restore. The remakes also added a lot of new overpowered equipment.

Titan feast bullshit is the worst part of the game. You can get past it.

The remakes made the game feel like a more modern FF, for better or worse. Generally in the original, the dungeons were more a challenge to the player than the boss at the end, as usually if you could reach the dungeon boss with full health and plenty of spell charges, he was a non-issue. I liked that sort of dungeon crawl feel, you were fighting attrition rather than individual enemies, everything was wearing you down while you were digging up loot and trying to find your way to the end.

Compare that to later FFs where X even goes so far as to make save points fully replenish your HP/MP and you lose something along the way. Bosses and superbosses became something you fight in a vacuum, and everything leading up to them might as well be filler.

The story is only okay, but the lore and side content is top notch and the class system is neat in the zodiac age version.

I'd like it quite a lot at just typical SNES-era levels of machinery, maybe the usual "advanced city in the sky" kind of shit as an area or plot-element since that dates all the way back to FF1. FF6's steampunk and FF7's contemporary setting were cool but I didn't like a huge amount of later games going contemporary trying to chase FF7. Hell, XIV's novel in setting for being pretty close to FF9 in terms of technological development and that's still an odd hodgepodge of technology from the 1600s to 1800s.

It does suck, but it goes a lot faster with some prep. Get the Brand New Ring from the role tutorials (Hall of the Novice) to make leveling to 30 a breeze.
