The only "defense" I have ever seen is that it only costs $20 a year so at least they aren't fucking you as much as Sony or Microsoft.
Personally I believe that even at $40 dollars cheaper the massive disparity in features and usability make it still worth less than XBL or PSN and it should be free. That isn't to say that XBL and PSN aren't massively overpriced cancer because they are but Switch Online despite being cheaper is no better in terms of value.
