I love how Neku changes on every week on the game. You don't see that kind overarching character change and development lately these days. Truly a story about self-acceptance and facing the world.

Neku legit has some of the best character growth I’ve seen in vidya. Not just in how he develops in the story but how the gameplay mechanics reflect his growth as a person, like how the dual screens represent his unwillingness to cooperate with other people and how, the more you start to get better at the game, the more he starts to grow closer with his partners and change for the better.

i just started this on the switch i like it so far not sure who this guy is but im enjoying the pace of the game so far kinda hard on the handheld version to get used to moving neku for me but im still enjoying it

Yeah, you can see that perfectly we using Fusion Attacks, when he begin hesitant or even reluctant to cooperate, but as you get greater Fusion Attack lvl he is more cooperative and confidant on his partner. To be honest, I have only seen this level of ludonarrative on DMC3 and DMC5, and that's pretty amazing.

Honestly, Beat probably has one of my favorite designs in the cast.

Nah, you’re alright on that front. The game allows you to grind for as long as you want until you decide to progress the story. The time limit is really only there for story purposes.

How long have you been at it? Maybe it really isn't for you, but it does take a while to click. It is easier on Switch, but it also drops a huge part of what makes the game so special.

Since you're so early into the game, I would really recommend that you keep giving the combat your best shot. It's very satisfying when you get it down and it's really not as complex as it may seem at the start. The other versions greatly simplify it but it just does not have the same impact that the DS version does.

Oh thank god for that, I was worried. If I may squeeze in one more question, would you have any tips on fighting on both screens? I usually end up abandoning one of my characters throughout the battle. One of them is usually pretty good on health, but the other tends to be on the verge of death.

I don't think I'm super far in right now. I'm not sure what my actual play time is, but I'm at the part where Neku and Shiki need to defeat the master of A-East, as well as restore power to the darkened concert hall.

After the other user said that there's not an actual penalty to grinding free battles, I'll probably spend more time in them until I get a bit better.

he's underappreciated in general but to be fair the rest of the cast is very tough competition

Pay attention to however has the light puck at the moment and try to complete a combo on their end to pass it to the other guy. Doing so helps increase your attack output and, now here’s a neat trick, if you use the healing pin when Neku has the light puck on him, the power of the health drink is dramatically increased. This helped me out a lot when I was getting used to the combat at first.

Me personally, I wound up abandoning the partner and focusing on Neku's battle screen. I believe there was a time where you could allow your partner to auto-battle if you didn't touch them at some point, but honestly, that was too slow. Their effectiveness in battle was like this:

Neku: Attack attack attack attack attack, welp, that's one pin drained, next.
Partner: Attack. Attack. Attack. Attack.

So to remedy that, I kinda just mashed left or right based on a quick glance at the top screen to see where enemies were. If the gimmick of the partner required something for ups or downs to get stars for the co-op attack, I would sometimes drop a bit of focus on Neku's fighting to give the partner a bit more attention. It got me through the entire DS campaign and through all of Another Day (outside of the extra boss battle). I'd say try your best to stick with the mechanics - it was a bit confusing and tough to wrap my head around at the start, but as the game progressed, it just became almost second nature and really fun. The plot being really good helped keep me interested too.

How did you juggle manning both joy-cons? I gave it a shot and it seems so much more difficult to manage compared to the DS's controls. Half of the time I lost control of Neku trying to just maintain either his or the partner's motion and fighting.

Depends on how you set up your pins and equipment. There’s an hidden stat called efficiency that actually increases the power of certain pins into unbelievably powerful heights when you use them in conjunction with the Light Puck. I once saw one guy on YouTube get up to over a 1000 damage in one hit with the Massive Hit psych.

Yeah, looking into it there seems to be a bit of variety which is good. This game's gameplay and the amount of pins is versatile enough that there just being one ultimate set that you might as well always use would be shitty.

not very well, honestly. every partner has an attack with some decent hitstun, but the only one with a launcher is beat and getting consistent clean upwards slashes against faster targets just isnt reliable.
i havent played around much yet with neku's launcher options, but i also havent started Another Day yet, so that could change soon. if you want advice with the controls, i'd say to prioritize finding a loose and comfortable resting position to play from, more than anything else. fuck pointing at the screen.

Etrian Odyssey as well. It's a shame that like EO, even if TWEWY gets a sequel, it won't be on hardware that the core gameplay was originally made for, and best took advantage of. I really think an overlooked part of what makes this game so special is that it was an absolutely perfectly timed and styled game to really connect with it's market audience. I can't think of any other game to really tap into the cultural zeitgeist like this one.

It reminds me a lot of FLCL in that way, funnily enough. I think it also helped that game felt like it knew what you were going through and didn’t seek to put you down. It genuinely wanted to help you become a better person and to go out and connect with people.

As gay as it is, the game actually did help make me more outgoing, or at least, willing to talk to others and expand my world. I'm not going to say it really said anything particularly revolutionary or eye opening, but I think said it pretty well. The way it went about delivering its message was really well done and having Neku be so unlikable and extreme at the start was a large part of it.

Personally I've always gone with Joshua for those levitating air combos but I guess Shiki has the simplest combo map? I think all three have pros and cons, basically.
