Star Ocean

Star ocean 4 is the best star ocean game.

2 > 1 >>> 3 > 4 > 5

>star ocean second story that low
bitch I will fucking fight you

5 is a good game.

I consider it the worst Star Ocean but I still thought it was a good game.

>2 that low
you have bad taste

Since fucking when? TLH is a shitshow.

4 is the absolute worst Star Ocean.

The game could have at least been as good as 4 if it just had 6 more months of development. It really did need that much more time.

It's a fucking ton better than whatever 4 was.

yeah, no

Earth was a mistake

Is that trophy even worth It? Seems like a meme plat.

2 and 1 are as best as Star Ocean can get.

Admittedly I haven't played 1 or 4 but it is only barely behind 2 and 3 for me though I haven't played those in a while, with everything I've heard about 4 I can't imagine it ever being better than it outside of residual backlash and had it gotten a proper budget and a few tweaks there would have been no contest whatsoever. It makes me sad how close to excellence it was but at least it doesn't fall apart at the end like 2 and 3 do.

>platinum

That's dedication. Star Ocean games aren't that great and they have some of the hardest trophies in vidya.

Your life must really suck. Still, congratulations.

nope.

>tfw 5 brings the whole thing back as an emote

Nothing is worse then 5

..also I'll give credits to Fidel for his emo phase lasting like 2 minutes

This was one of the best innovations of the game, the canned reaction kit lets you act like an autist in serious situations.

While it was nice to have something to do, I'd honestly have preferred to just be able to skip all this shit I already seen rather than fool around during it.

What did he see?

Here's a question, why did anyone ever give a fuck about star ocean post-SNES era? It's a bland as fuck series and every generation beyond 16 bit, it was dunked on by literally every other JRPG series.

LITERAL trash

The whole galaxy.

Is star ocean 5 worth buying?

>post-snes
What, there was just one star ocean on the snes, and most people didn't even play that version (I did personally, with a fan translation, only version of it I played).

I got it for free and I still feel ripped off.

>Thread sorda makes me want to play SO5 again,

>But then remember that part of the game

The battle system was a slog. SO4 felt much better to play.

>Edge Maverick
"No"

>nappy time

Lads what would be your perfect star ocean game?

Unironically the best character design in vidya

>You earned a trophy: So You Wasted Your Life

Definitely not. SO5 had a couple of good ideas but in general it was fucking atrocious, especially when it came to "story" and "characters".

Don't even get me started on the cutscenes.

If it's on sale and there isn't anything else you're into then sure. It's a budget game and it shows in some places more than others but it also does some nice things, there's quite a lot of variety in customising with equipment and roles and the combat's quite fun, but the default difficulty is too easy for you to really mess with it so you have to use exp conversion roles.

AAAHH FUCK WHY HELP I DON'T HAVE ANY SAVE POINTS THAT FAR BACK

Some kind of mix of 3 and 2.
I really liked the combat, item creation, extra/post-game shit to do in 3.
I want a story closer to 2, maybe more technologically advanced stuff though. I also didn't hate the twist in 3 as much as so many others do.

Yeah if it's less than 10 bucks.
Any more than that, no. Good for a single playthrough, maybe dabble in the scant post-game content then put it away forever.

I just wish I'd be able to see something when I play SO5 on hardest.

this is me a while ago fighting with mostly no idea what is happening (still had bit shitty gears back in that vid). I could simply not use that move but well, it was so effective ..also made me use something cheaper because I couldn't see.

FUCKYOUFUCKYOUFUCKYOU

needs more HP

First half of SO2 style setting with first half of SO3 atmosphere and story and combat based on SO5 with some SO3, better mixing the parts of 3 that would actually work better with how 5 plays like juggling for combos since you have free reign for cancels.

What the fuck is going on in this video

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 17K)

I literally cannot beat the first gabriel celeste.

Did you ever wonder why people waste so much of their lives to be able to do such thingsi n video games?

..that aside I admit I still liked making all those OP gears and setting up for using on Chaos

3rd fight was pretty smooth (AI Victor actually wasn't dying anymore -- mostly had him use ranged moves so he wouldn't close in too often too), but didn't record it

Looks like the female version of Sephirothclone McEdgelord self-insert character

What other games have a star ocean like aesthetic or setting?
I loved SO3, but I found 4 to be stiff and generic in its characters, and I heard mixed things about 5.
Is there anything else out there that can fill this niche?
youtube.com/watch?v=iuZzvRIj4Vw

I used to watch that intro nearly every time I started the game back in the day.

tldr; Good Japanese space RPGs?

>not putting Dead Man Walking on Miki
It's still op as shit but at least it feels less like it. Also thanks for the giggle they should have thought about how it looked from different angles. Also I would have appreciated player and enemy skill names being at separate places.

If you found 4 stiff and generic then 5 is about 10x worse.
The whole game is about 7 "fields" on one planet, and then the final boss dungeon which is sort of in space but not.

yeah, honestly I didn't care much at that point

If I want to do a run with limitations I rather just do something like a solo run of SO3

I've dropped it a bunch of times kaayyyyyyyy
the voice acting was really bad kayyyyyyyy
the story was kind of shitty too kayyyyyyy
the gameplay was decent though kayyyy

Was it autism?

>tfw never even heard that 'Kay but was seeing it in the subs for seemingly no reason
Guess I'll never know how it felt due to the Jap audio.

>Star Ocean 4
Wasn't this game the one where the combat system is literally just spamming that retarded blindside mechanic over and over again? or was that 5?

The Ethereal Queen from Radiata Stories has the hands down the best design.

Attached: Ethereal_Queen.jpg (545x391, 51K)

Yes

The whole theme of being the aliens fucking with planets was pretty cool

Blindsides are pretty good. Some enemies have counters to your blindsides, which you can counter back. A lot of the time through they use an AoE attack just as you try a blindside meaning you get smacked like a little bitch.
You should never rely on them, especially bigger enemies will stunlock you to death if you try it.

5 didn't have blindsides. It had a different problem; it tried a rock-paper-scissors approach with light/heavy attacks and guarding.
Sadly the heavy attack not only breaks guards but is rarely if ever interrupted by light attacks like the game says.
I beat the entire thing just spamming heavy attack skills flawlessly.

>tfw doing a solo run with Maria and radiation bots
youtube.com/watch?v=TxEPfRe6B1w

Well, while I did word it like that, having it on Miki and disabling her single target healing spell makes it quite literally impossible to get a game over. Funny you mention that since the last time I played SO3 I was thinking of doing a solo run of it, then after I played SO5 I felt like doing a solo run of that instead. Maybe one of these days I'll go back to one of them, but being able to equip a full set of moves and cancel between any of them just feels so much better in 5 and I wish it was in 3, but I doubt anyone made a cheat for both of those though maybe an infinite CP one exists.

I loved SO4's overall plot but hated the dialogue so much.
Being the prequel game showing why the UP3 came into being was radical, but I couldn't stand Edge, especially with how emotional he was, flipping out over fucking nothing.

Green Megaman was the best character.

SO3 was the only good one gameplay wise

Didn't Edge stay Emo for like 3 planets after past earth?

Meanwhile me on normal difficulty
youtube.com/watch?v=ecpOdSIWaXw

Don't know how I would have beaten him without deadman walking.

my Miki was virtually never dying even without it anyway. Unlike other chars she was setup as a pure tank, Dead Man could instead go on the glass cannon. But well, originally I was thinking of simply not using it but I was getting tired in late post-game on Chaos, and couldn't see what was even happening anymore with all those huge HP pools to take down.

3 is overall a lot less spammy and learning enemy patterns start to mean something when soloing making it a bit more interesting

Just Roak, and he finally cheers up about halfway through. Just in time for Faize to start becoming a psychopath and finally be replaced by the most fun party member.

So is SO3 as laggy control wise as it seems or is that just PCSX2?

the game just feels really unresponsive on pcsx2

I got the HD remake on ps4 and it never felt laggy or unresponsive.

Normal heavy attacks can be interrupted but skills of any kind do not. They break the system in a way in exchange for MP but the drawback is meant to be that you eat all the damage which shreds your bonus gauge. However since they made normal mode piss easy that doesn't feel like it's a big deal, but on higher difficulties it makes perfect sense as you need the damage and invul and can't risk getting hit that much since you just die. They really fucked up not having at least hard mode open by default.

it's all in the gears, you can technically setup a character to survive even the 6 wings queen on chaos just standing there (but damage will suffer, making dead man a lot faster -- especially considering 259,200,000 HP when you can't even deal over 99999 per hit and most hits won't be anywhere near that high)

>youtu.be/8aVw7BHlsrc
subscribed for making me laff

I don't recall any lag on either PS2 or PS4 (didn't try with PCSX2), but SO3 did feel a bit more on the "tanky" controls side, and you're not really just spamming like you would in 4 and 5. Bit like in where inputs are meaning something.

Yeah that works just as well if not better, it's just the idea is you still have to act like you're trying, but Miki will always be there to revive everyone afterwards, and I'd never sleep on Ethereal "lol supernova" Queen.
Calling 3 less spammy is kinda funny with how much less you can actually do but the clearer visuals do go a long way in making it feel like that I think.
>tfw I made armour specifically for the shadow party to drop their damage to 10% after getting stuck on them and was so amazed at how easy it was I just reloaded the save and beat them the next try without it
Honestly feel like that fight is on par with the big two in terms of difficulty but gear can get so op.

It honestly was a lot of the voice acting and i felt the character designs looked weird compared to 3s. I thought 4s designs were at least much better. Dunno the plot though.

5 suffered from a few things. My main gripe is how they tried to cover up the lack of cutscenes by forcing you to stand there watching static characters talk. You could walk around and emote but I think the novelty on that wore off very, very quickly and at some point I was begging them to take back camera control in cutscenes to give me something to look at other than my group of party members talking for hours on end without any visual meat to digest.

The 20 minute space battle where you have to listen to Emmerson and some background characters narrate how apparently exciting it is, was around the time I was debating throwing in the towel.

I didn't mind those scenes myself THE FIRST TIME, let me skip them when I'm replaying for higher difficulties, jesus.

I was kinda speedrunning universe to do my real playthrough on Chaos and probably would've more than halved my time skipping those.

4 had GOAT endgame

The wandering dungeon on EN II was shitty though.

I need to pick up SO2 again, but i cant choose between fucking Pericci and helping my boy Ashton get laid
