I ended up playing it more for the mini games then the main game mode for that reason. The least bad way to play ended up being the dpad but on a 3d space that's not a good thing

Washed out colours is better in this instance though. Far easier to look at and grasp the geometry than some full saturation neon green ms paint hellscape

I liked it, honestly. Never understood the D-pad complaints. it worked out fine.
The minigames were pretty fun. Even if I only played a select few of them, I did play those a lot.

It had some great ideas, but ultimately, it was stuck to inchoate hardware that wasn't designed to support that control style and level of 3D graphics.
However, if Nintendo ever did produce a remake of SM64, whether it be a project for new-team members or a gap filler title in software drought years, then I certainly wouldn't be all too opposed to SM64DS's changes being implemented in that too. Although character switching should be as simple as a quick menu change.

In theory the stick could be mapped to the touch screen but there wouldn't be a way to do that just from modding the game.

The main problem of this game besides controls was that all 3 characters they added are far inferior to Mario. It's much more fun to play the entire game with Mario alone. Wario may be fun in theory but in the actual game he was just a fatass.
