When you're a kid and growing up, it's part of identity formation when you're figuring out who YOU are, versus the other kids, to find ideas or groups which you can be a part.
This feeling of being a part of something, and the idea of ongoing immersion in a cultural phenomenon, makes fortnite very attractive, due to its huge presence on Twitch, on youtube, and in schools.
Seeing it in another place at that age (game stores) further validates the feeling that you're part of something on the cusp (because it implies people still want to buy it) and indicates continuing cultural relevance.
Most people will ultimately grow out of this in their late teens, because they've enjoyed this cycle several times, when the group they were part of drops out of cultural relevance, and no longer feel its novelty or the need to get back in immediately to do it again.
