Is Rosalina as popular in Japan as Lightning is? Lightning IIRC is only controversial in the west

Rosalina just shows up in Mario spinoffs because they have few prominent female Mario characters. Most of the enemies look masculine too which doesn't help that. In the recent Mario party they even shoved in fucking pompom to get an extra girl on the roster.

Nah, Duodecim was literally Lightning showing off that she is smarter and stronger than the entire FF pantheon, beating up WoL and taking his place as leader, and everyone sucking her girlcock. XIII-2 is a great game, but the plot still has everyone going "WHERE'S LIGHTNING, GOTTA FIND LIGHTNING" and her becoming the actual god of time for reasons.

Rosalina was introduced in Super Mario Galaxy, which came out in 2007. She didn't get revealed for 3D World and Kerfuffle until 2013. That's 6 years in between, and the only games she appeared in between then were Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 7, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. She wasn't brand new anymore by the time the Smash reveal happened.
