I disagree, i think the game had great variety and knew when to break up the story and gameplay segments in an entertaining way without disrupting the flow or making itself too obvious that 'now you are playing a game', or the 'now you are watching a cutscene' trap that open world game fall into.

They seeded open ended pieces to Ellie's character but didn't have anything in mind at the time. Riley didn't exist at that point in the games development, once the game was finished they commissioned a few Extended Universe comics that heavily featured Riley and the artist of those comics was the one who chose to make her black and also a love interest. Left Behind leans into the EU comic really hard to the point where it's easy to ignore the comic and the DLC entirely because it's so out of character for Druckmann's Ellie that it really shouldn't be considered canon.

I have both a PS4 and PS3; I played TLoU not long after launch. I thought it was really mediocre; it was just a painfully generic zombie story on top of a mostly competent cover-based shooter with tacked on crafting and shitty stealth.
