There are certain aesthetics that people associate with 'fantasy' and want to evoke.
Someone being mounted on a horse is one of them, without that it ceases to be 'fantasy' and starts to feel more like 'sci-fi', at least at a casual glance.

Back in vanilla getting a mount was a fucking hassle because of how much gold they cost.
The Warlock mounts were bullshit since those fuckers got that shit for free.

Just wanted to chime in and say that horses are by far the most romanticised and overrated animals on the planet. They're petulent assholes, scared of their own shadow, always looking to run away or mess with you just for fun, and they're incredibly brittle and sickly too. Fuck horses.

Well if it helps I had a dream about these tall creatures that can only be described as having and almost similar body to a deer or a horse but their head is like a fox or a cat and their snouts are long and their eyes have these big slit pupil eyes and their fur is a tangerine bright red and they have paws like a big dog, but their facial expressions are very humanlike, they don't talk but they make noises.
Maybe that can be used in a fantasy setting.
