What's funny about this movie in particular is how terrible the shilling is. Even flipping through channels and watching some interview from Robin Roberts from Good Morning America saying weird stuff like asking one of the voice actors, "How did you do it?"

As if it was already a success. The original Lion King and a lot of Disney's other animated movies on the same level were great because they stand on their own merits, even today. People generally know what's good and can tell for themselves when they see it or hear it for themselves. Usually because a lot of passion was put into it from the top down.

I mean, one of the things that doesn't work for people right off the bat is how they're just going through their movie-ography as if they're hitting next on the CD player. People know it's unoriginal so you come to expect something more. Not rehashed scenes, songs and look that are at best even with the original and at worst laughably bad.

Remakes in and of themselves aren't inherently bad. It just doesn't help that most of the time that ends up being the case because it ends up being a money-grab more often than not or even worse with recent trends of shoving politics in it.

There are good remakes out there though, just take a look at Pokemon HG/SS. You need a good, seasoned director to remake something though, but also be willing to bring new things to the table. Most good remakes are because new, fun and original content is brought forth on top of making sure the original idea is intact and at the very least, up to par.

People can tell right away if something is wrong because it's how our brains are wired. If something doesn't look right because in live action animal movies you can't display emotion or you have a subpar sound direction with a middling vocalist, you'll be outed the second they start singing and the music plays.
