Learn how to cheese the ai. That's literally it unless you play multiplayer and even them depending on where the actual people its just a race to cheese the ai more than the other guys until your tips touch.

I've played civ5 for years and never gotgud, i don't care. I just enjoy it.

You just need to understand the various minutia, like the importance of morale in the early period of the game, and the transition from using mostly infantry/cav to exclusively infantry/artillery filling out the combat width. Watch youtube lets plays desu. Getting a sense of how a nation should be played is very helpful when starting out. Eventually, you learn what to look for when starting as a new nation and don't need the training wheels anymore.

Learn how the order of battle and supplies systems work. Create a competent order of battle before ever unpausing the game. Trying to reorganize your military after you've already started gearing up for war is just a headache.

Buy all the DLC. Game is literally balanced around mechanics that are locked behind paywalls at this point.
