Metroid is pretty much a Western series, and its seems that only Retro is skilled enough to make good Metroid games now since the last good 2D Metroid was 2002 and the last good Metroid game period was 2007.
But it could be worse, just look at F-Zero.

The only remaining Prime devs still there only worked on 3, all the Prime 1 guys are long gone.

and prime 3 was by far the worst.

If Mercury Steam is really working on Metroid 5 then it will be the first time in a long time that a Metroid game has had the same developer twice in a row, which is a huge deal.

Part of why Metroid turned into such a fucking mess is because developers weren't getting a chance to learn from their mistakes.

Splatoon is a surprise hit that even surprised Nintendo. Metroid is a core series that doesn't appeal to kids and has no waifus. I'm not surprised Splatoon is more popular.

Because those games have dedicated studios to develop games for them. HAL practically does nothing but develop Kirby games. Nintendo has no studio for Metroid, nor for something like F Zero or even Star Fox, which is why they always get outsourced.

Metroid is more of a westerner thing, the Japanese don’t hate it, it just doesn’t click with them.

Mother 3 has a great fan translation that you can just emulate on your phone. Anyone who ever wanted to play it has already.

They kinda had retro for prime/metroid but then they for some reason just had them do like 2 dk games in 10 years.

Imagine Retro absorbing some other groups and becoming the dedicated Metroid Prime, Metroid 2D, DK, Starfox, and F-Zero dev.

I'd gladly have more Starfox or F-Zero than more Kirby. I'm not a fan of how bland and easy his games are.

Some of their franchises they don't change, others they change the way they play.

Yokoi tried to cancel the best game in the series, he thought a million sells was too little for a series, no offense but I'm glad his employees cared more about the series.

He didn't care so much that he bought time for his team against the upper management of Nintendo so they could release their polished Super Metroid, a game that he criticized in development for taking a long time to build, but then spent his days playing, being proud of his team, calling it a masterpiece and then comparing every product he supervised to SM's quality.

Anyway, Metroid died the moment R&D1 died when it merged with other teams at Nintendo, same for Warioware. Metroid Fusion is the last true game of the series, and while I don't despise Other M, it definitely doesn't meet the expectations of the series. Samus Return wasn't bad as well, but I definitely question the 3D artstyle and some gameplay elements like the pointless Aeon that feels forced, the uninspired level design, the small monster variety. Also why the fuck do they need lots of beam shots/one melee counter and why isn't the Screw Attack OHK ? Who thought that was a good idea ?
