Spiderman is the most popular mainstream hero. He's kid friendly, fun to play as, and anyone can jump in. Superman could be but that brand has been tainted hard. Batman isn't, none of the Avengers are really. Spidey has always been the go to.

Couple that with the most popular console by far and it makes sense. And it had cred coming from a dev that specializes in the things we want from Spiderman.

Why would you think it wouldn't do well? No Switch port? The Switch isn't a serious contender, it aims at a different audience. PC ports never sell well and nobody owns an Xbone.

Arkham City wasn't as good as Asylum, so I'm not surprised it got outsold. Had they iterated on the first game and fixed the issues, like the lackluster bosses, they could have made a way better game. And maybe even avoided the disaster that is Arkham Knight

City's bosses were better than Asylum's though. Not by much, but they were better. I think the biggest thing that held City back was that when Rocksteady went into Asylum, they had this particular vision for the game in mind, and much of that tied directly to that setting of Arkham Asylum. After the game being a smash success, they were expected to expand the scope of that game, and this involved making it a modern open world game so they could use Gotham City as a setting rather than a tiny little island they could flesh out. This didn't translate as well to the formula they had built in AA. I still enjoy pretty much every game in the series, but AA is still the best mostly because it has the most manageable scope for the developers' tastes and abilities.

DC not being able to make a halfway decent movie in about a decade and stumbling with their movie universe has hurt the wider appeal. They can still make some decent animated stuff every so often, but they dropped the ball on the big budget movie side and they'll likely never recover.
