OLD GOOD
NEW BAD

You literally cannot get more soulful than this.

Attached: friend area pokemon mystery dungeon.png (1600x1160, 2.51M)

>mystery dungeon
my nigga

>literally just a sprite of biggoron from OoT or MM
nah

Very limited system = maximum creativity if you want to do some decent games.
It was basically forcing the developers to be creative and artistic.

Pure, unadulterated soul.

Attached: battle network.gif (462x386, 1.14M)

everything was so soft and colourful on gba

The graphics may have soul but the GBA has fucking awful audio. Everything sounds like absolute shit and soulless.

Are you kidding? GBA compression is absolutely soulful if in the hands of the right composers

The links you posted are absolutely ear grating. Fuck the sound of the GBA. I literally can't think of something with worse sound.

NES

The worst is the actual speakers I cant hear shhit, they are too low.

C'mon user, take the language you use more seriously. I'm sure you can think of a worse sound if you actually thought about it.
Here on 4channel we like to take on life with sincerity.

Wrong

The old Sega consoles have also bad sound but at least they have a sound chip unlike the GBA.

You're wrong. The composition of that aria of sorrow track is godlike and one of my favorites but the GBA ruined it. Imagine if we had the same track for something with good sound.

Is the PocketGo a good emulator for GBA games? If not what is the best GBA emulator?

OP didn't mention a thing about new games user. Stop projecting
and they had amazing soul

Minish Cap
KH Chain of Memories
Megaman Battle Network 3

My absolute favorite GBA games and some of my favorite games ever

Attached: CoMttt.png (408x270, 116K)

mGBA is the best GBA emulator currently, you can get it on phones through RetroArch

NOOOO
NONONONON STOP
DON'T MAKE ME REMEMBER

If you hack a 3DS you can emulate GBA games on it pretty well.
There's a bunch of different models but if you're on a budget you can just get a 2DS.

>they got removed from the next i stallement
Why.

i just fucking hate how no PMD after red/blue had friend areas.

superstar saga

I literally couldn't play that new Mystery Dungeon for the 3DS because it looked completely soulless.

32 bit sprites are loaded with soul

wish shitty indie game makers understood this and put in some effort to emulate it instead of just constantly going for the 8 bit and 16 bit looks.

Name a better lineup
>The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
>Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
>Mother 3
>Mega Man Zero
>Mega Man Zero 2
>Mega Man Zero 3
>Mega Man Zero 4
>The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords
>Advance Wars
>Wario Land 4
>Mega Man Battle Network
>Gunstar Super Heroes
>Mario vs. Donkey Kong
>Metroid: Zero Mission
>Drill Dozer
>Golden Sun
>Golden Sun: The Lost Age
>Sonic Advance
>Sonic Advance 2
>Sonic Advance 3
>Metroid Fusion
>Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
>Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
>Pokémon Emerald
>Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green
>Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team/Blue Rescue Team
>Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge
>Sonic Battle

-Soulless soundchip
-washed out shitty colors after the first few game releases because lolnobacklight

All of those games are 2D so that would be exceptionally easy

Because soul = graphics that aged poorly

add the GBA FEs and it's perfect

>sonic games
>banjo kazooie grunty's revenge

Superstar saga and all 4 MMZ games alone completely nullify all hope of there ever being a better lineup

It's a shame /vr/ doesn't make an exception for GBA discussion.

the sonic gba games where great user

Yeah I wish 6th gen was the cutoff for /vr/ because 7th really was the turning point where everything went to shit

it also had a shitload of hidden gems

Making 32bit look good is hard and requires a lot of actual artwork and storyboarding that most shovelware won't bother with.

Sonic Advance games were kinda fun user.
Never played the Banjo one though.

Everyone forgetting Mario Tennis and Mario Golf. Those were amazing games with interesting characters and all the shitty Mario characters were just shoved into the post-game of the story mode.

When the next gen is released does /vr/ bump up?

wheres my nigga Boktai

you forgot astro boy

Missed Astro Boy

don't forget about Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure! it's sick as fuck

NEW GOOD
OLD BAD

It was a time where creating games wasn't so high cost. Now you're stuck with no budget, new ideas or a lot of money, but playing it safe

Never heard of this but it actually looks pretty fun.

You forgot
>Advance Wars
>Fire Emblem (all 3 of them)
>Riviera: The Promised Land
>Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
>Shining Soul II
>Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town (and MFoMT too)
>Summon Night: Swodcraft Story
>Konjiki no Gash Bell - Makai no Bookmark
>Ninja Five-O
>Bit Generations series
>Hamtaro: Ham-ham Games
>F-Zero

Colorful, competently-drawn and well-animated pixel art. The hardware was perfect for 16-bit graphics and developers had by then mastered the visual side of things

No. They see 6th gen as the start of the era for modern gaming, so 6th gen is early modern while 7th gen is mid modern. Everything before 6th gen is retro era.

>sonic games
The only bad Sonic game in that list is Advance 3.

It is!
It's got way more content than I would've expected for a licensed DB game on GBA
Definitely worth to play

>implying HD pixel art is not better than any BS 3d they throw at us nowadays

This is the reason why Red Rescue team is the best mystery dungeon game

Advance 3 is fucking great. Sunset Hill Zone is peak soul.

>GAY GOOD

>STRAIGHT BAD

Attached: 1561899076926.png (253x440, 252K)

It hits the sweetspot between of pixel count. NES/GB games were on the low site and while they had some nice pixel art, they couldn't be all that expressive. Later gens were too good in a sense that it can't be considered pixel art anymore.

Let me add Sabre Wulf, it's rarely mentioned.

Attached: file.png (480x320, 322K)

Anyone played le this gem?
It's pretty fun but easy as fuck.

Attached: 2507.png (240x160, 13K)

I don't think you should buy that until like a month from now when a bunch of people have tried and reviewed it. I had a bittboy by the same people and its usb port broke off from the motherboard and I had to solder it back on

that's exactly what im implying

Yes, it's basically Gundam Breaker with marbles

The GBA was the last gasp of SOUL before 3D soullessness took over.

with or without the gba screen

Attached: Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow-190710-221821.png (1920x1080, 755K)

When did the "soul" buzzword takeoff?

He didn't forget Advance Wars

Attached: power of money.gif (295x221, 2.94M)

Need more game with soul

Attached: images (2).png (480x320, 13K)

I like it with the gba screen on. Looks like you're actually playing on the real thing.

youtube.com/watch?v=jrpoqgIG28I
imagine having this bad of taste

shame there wasnt a new super mario. Would loved to have seen super mario bros 5 or whatever.

Zoomers unable to properly explain why a game is good.

me too

Attached: 0026 - Final Fight One-190710-194252.png (1920x1080, 731K)

what about the genesis farting sounds

Let me explain "soul":
In the past, games had smaller teams and budgets but there was more room for innovation and individual expression due to smaller, tightly knit teams; in general AAA games were not as safe and tidy. Today you generally have to look to indie games for that sort of development situation because budget is through the roof and shareholders get sweaty.

Attached: 1560421679121.jpg (1536x2048, 441K)

Friend areas were boring after a while

You mean Blue Rescue Team

Anyone else agree that the Mystery Dungeon games are better than the main Pokemon games?

Attached: 1551537519716.jpg (602x602, 51K)

Also the hardware was a lot more limited. You couldn't fallback on good graphics and marketing to sell your game, you actually had to invest in making a good artstyle and deal with the constraints of the system.

Literally everyone with taste thinks that.

Attached: pokemon mysterydungeon.jpg (800x600, 135K)

That's part of it as well, I was going to say something about the early 3D worflow and the SGI days but I cut it.

>Ninja Five-O

The washed out color thing is definitely one of the absolute worst things when playing certain GBA games on emulators and shit. Some games have a patch for it but god, what a stupid decision considering even Game Boy Color games didn't do this.

It's interesting because by the time of the GBA the making of games was a lot easier (aka, didn't have to be so anal about spite tiles), but the actual hardware limitation was still there.

I’m disappointed I bought the shitty DBZ game

Attached: F72B4A11-9550-4349-8B5C-4235DF940014.jpg (266x266, 36K)

I fucking loved this game.
