I start with a goal in-mind, like wanting to recreate a level or theme from another game or making a certain type of level I’d like to play in a Mario game. Then it usually flows from there.

Somehow this has like no clears despite not really being a tricky level. I wouldn't even say it's kaizo lite. Visual story telling, pretty whack boss at the end. Ample checkpoints. Probably my weakest course, still.
My new course is finally up! I started work on this course pretty much day one, and has been finished for a while, but actually completing the course clear was a bitch. Its pretty hard.

Amazing level idea
Finally finished with the revised version of this level. It has a huge secret, and all I will tell you is that there's a checkpoint flag somewhere in this stage.
New level. It's a 30s speed run in mario world that involves most of the power ups: mushroom, fire flower, star, cape. It's kinda tight, but I completed it in 29.083, so it's not super duper tight.

I decided to make a Superball-themed level, because I hadn't seen any posted here yet, and because the music is baller.
Use superballs to trigger P switches, POW blocks and detonate Bob-Ombs to clear a path to the end! There is a secret passage for cowards who don't want to make the leap of faith.
The restricted movesets of SMB & SMB 3 give some design opportunities that World and NSMB don't offer.

I made a level and tagged it as standard/themed. When I woke up today and checked back, the tags were changed to multiplayer versus/themed. Can other users tag your levels for you or something? Or did a mod play my level and then re-tag it without notifying me? Because I really didn't design it for multiplayer versus.
Others can change your tags unless you disable that option.

Remade this level from WiiU. I remember Yea Forums really liked the original. It's a very traditional, old-school platforming level involving moving donut blocks, with various obstacles as the level goes on.
Pretty short, can be speedrun quite nicely once you've got the hang of it. There may or may not be a little secret somewhere in the level. Let me know if you find it.

Good level, the rooms are a decent challenge. The blue pipe took me a bit of time though, really specific jumps it felt like. Then I beat both boss fights independent of each other, but kept dying on the 2nd one every time - then accidentally pressed Start Over and got sent back to the beginning. I will try this one again in a bit because I really like it.
Fun level, liked the gradual increase in difficulty.
Seen these levels a few times and kept meaning to get around to them. Awesome levels man, they capture the level design of the Souls games well. Some parts I struggled to see the resemblance but others were spot on, especially the boss fights. Followed your profile, hope you carry these on.

Really fun concept and challenges. I think you could get much better reception from players (and make the experience more enjoyable) by adding "reset doors"at the start and the checkpoint to reset goombas and powerups (or put powerups from pipes?). Also a new cloud floor at the checkpoint altitude.
I say this because it became frustrating having to kill myself each time I bungled the delicate 1 goomba jumps at the top and falling all the way to bottom took ages.

Bit Crusade 3 is an adventure series of Mario levels that play in the traditional sense (scaling difficulty, hidden rooms and level theming). So if you like traditional Mario stages you’ll probably like these. The “game” will eventually utilize all 5 styles so there’s a little something for everyone. I made a version of SMB 1-1 where the level becomes more distorted and random the further you go. There's a section where the opening screen repeats with different variants, and parts of the level are 1-1 but horizontally upwards and downwards. Also, all the fire flowers are Super Ball Flowers instead.

Only certain enemies don't walk off from them. If you really need to prevent them from doing so, you could use One-Way Gates or just place blocks so they can turn around.

Airship stage based on jumping into and out of parachuting Dry Bones shells. Coins help time the jumps. Much easier than its previous incarnation, but still pretty difficult if you can't get the handle of jumping into a shell without grabbing it.

If you guys are going to make levels that are intentionally frustrating or shitty can you at least not post them here? These threads are legitimately making me start to hate Mario Maker. A lot of the stuff I see here is worse than what you find in endless, worse than playing the realization of some 12 year old kid's autistic nightmare.
The way levels are designed says a lot about the creator and you guys are giving me the impression that you are really ugly on the inside.
I like it after it stops the "1-1 remake" portion. It felt original and hectic and fun after that, though!

Thrice now have I made it to past the double parachute goombrat pit only to drop down slightly too close with the red shell and hit the goombrat on the spike thus losing the shell and a means back up to get another and forcing myself to suicide. Ice Wizard Castle was cool, but I got softlocked by the bob-ombs blowing up the hard blocks in room with the second magikoopa. Don't know if it was intentional or not but I wasn't a fan of it happening.

It was fun. A little tricky at parts and I got softlocked on the right side during the first part. The climbing gauntlet was tricky with the timing but not painful or imsurmountable without checkpoints.

What is the thinking with the 2 extra P-blocks at the bottom area though? To stall the round starting? I felt the On/Off switches were a bit overused - really hard to say without testing in multi but I worry it could just turn into a frustrating bog as people instantly toggle back and forth. Perhaps have some hard to perform donut block alternative squares in the same part?
Thanks so much for playing man, the 2nd magikoopa room bomb issue was not intended and is one of 2 softlock possibility screw ups I made on that level. I was still new to Mario Maker and didn't really get all the ways softlocks can happen - it's just frustrating Nintendo doesn't let me update without wiping the likes/momentum the course has slowly gained.

P-Block idea totally makes sense, good thinking ahead. Question though - how do you popularize multiplayer courses? I heard that "liking" a course in singleplayer boosts it FOR singleplayer playing while "liking" in multiplayer boosts only for that playstyle.
But you can't really advertise to Yea Forums or any community to get that initial bump for multiplayer though so you have to depend on random people picking it up?
i look at level maps from old games with excellent level design that translates well into MM2 like gimmick, SotN, super star, and super gng for inspiration

Protip. If you make a stage where the player can die within the first 5 or so seconds expect ragequitters to Boo your course.
Glad you anons enjoyed it! Should also mention that I made it speedrun friendly as well, if you're ever curious to try and speed right through it. You'll need to use both helmets at key points in order to get it down right.

Granted the 2nd level abuses a weird gimmick which i tried my hardest to explain in the level but it seems that not many people have gotten it.
ID is 7RM-PRP-3YG, the gimmick of the level is tree climbing, and hopping off of a tree backwards gives you way more momentum.

It's fun, overall it was just a really solid course that had a solid theme you stuck to. Really enjoyed it I didn't see any sniper shit or unfairness to the player.
Nitpicks: You could have used coins a bit more as a guide (for example to encourage me to jump and activate the leftmost Thwomp that spawns a vine, and on some more jumps between Thwomps. Also could have been a bit more generous with mushrooms.
You can't take Boo's to personally. I get em all the time from literal 6 year olds and I'm pretty sure there are some turbo-virgins that just suicide and boo every course because they think it will help their shit levels.

I didn't like this. it felt very empty and like it punished you for playing as Big Mario. I didn't boo it because you have the right idea on some of this stuff, I just think it could probably be done differently, or portions could be expanded into full stages.

I liked it, except for that jump involving the triangle-shaped track. It's also hard to tell when one is supposed to jump on Ps and not at certain points.
This was fun, I see what you mean about speedrunning it once you get a good flow, I flubbed up in the webm but I got it the try after. jonnys a beast, dunno how he did it in 13 seconds. Found the secret which was nice of you to put in there heh.
Those spin jumps were tricky but fun once I got the hang of them, and also fuck you for that pipe at the start lol, my natural curiosity forced me to try and get to it and all I found was sadness and soiled briefs. Good show man.

When I see this shit I start to not care about my own likes
Me again, just beat it. The general setup is pretty good, the rise and fall of the lava fits the solid block layout for the most part, barring the third red coin, the timing for that one is pretty dang tight and I was stuck trying to get it for a while. The second section was fine up until the bill blaster section, really easy to get hit and lose the shell there but that might be because I was staying too far ahead of the rising lava. Other than that, its not too shabby for a first level, albeit a semi punishing one. I had fun playing it!
I'll give it a go after I grab a snack.

Just got the game last night. I want to design a course centred around Lakatu throwing random shit (from boos to bombs) and call it Lakatu’s wild ride. How would I go about it lads? I’m still brainstorming on how the level should play out (either on rails or on the ground, lava level or not) and what enemies should Lakatu throw. I just finished it and the rest of your profile. The theme you got going on is nice, feels spacey enough, though there's a few BG objects I can see behind the spikes like trees and stuff. Using the star to transition from one area to the next was good, really the only complaints I have is that you don't spend much time in the ship blasting goombas, and its a little on the shortish side but sometimes that's fine depending on the level. I look forward to V2.
This game has the exact same tagline and premise as LBP, which came out 11 years ago and did the whole “play, create, share” thing far better. So much so that someone was able to make a full playable version of MM2 in LBP.

Pretty enjoyable, the first half is a bit overwhelming visually, there's a lot going on to take in at once but once my eyes adjusted it was much clearer to me what to look out for. The on/offs weren't too bad I thought but there's quite a few, and the more you have the more stuff you have to take into account with player position and all that crap.
The castle part was awesome, I liked the string of puzzley bonus rooms you had at the end. Aesthetically its great, and the overall stage is pretty fun. I like the premise too and the visuals definitely fit. Interested to see what ya make next.

I've played Dusty Gorge and Castle Ordeals so far, playing Chillshroom Heights atm.
I think Dusty Gorge nailed the SMW feel, wouldn't be out of place at Chocolate Island in terms of difficulty and setting, I found both bonus rooms too.
Castle ordeals is a neat series of challenges, most are fun, but holy fuck that bullet hallway is insane. I'd have put another checkpoint right before it, kinda bites you have to go through 3 rooms just to have another shot at it but its not really that bad I don't think.
You gotta let him come to you, much easier to steal his cloud that way.

A level based around hammer bros I did with a friend. They were a chore for the player, so we came up with multiple ways to get rid of them. Nothing too unusual for seasoned Mario Makers.
Level can be played as a speedrun, a puzzle or just a straightforward Mario platformer. Secrets are present as usual.
Spikes are ridiculous. The 3D World spike blocks are also weird, but that's more on the animation side, you can die before the animation frame of the spikes is out. Piranha Creepers are janky as hell too.

If you jump parallel to a wall and there is a spike somewhere in the middle of it, you get hit even though you are not colliding with the wall.

People often just don't play autoscroll levels, and that will save you from getting boo'd as much.

It's not an "unplayed courses" tab, it's a new courses tab. Your course appears and anyone who refreshes the new tab around there will see it.
Lots of people play new courses to get first clears.

I could've sworn the courses were so far behind because they didn't go away until somebody played them, resulting in the massive backlog.
The issue was that people made so many courses over the first week or so that the new courses tab couldn't keep up and was severely delayed. And your course does not appear in Endless Mode for anyone until it has at least 1 play.
So people had to either wait 4-5 days for their course to finally appear in the new course tab, or "skip the line" by getting someone to play it directly - at which point the course would then immediately enter the Endless Mode and see more plays there.
But as said before, the new courses tab hasn't been delayed for quite some days now, meaning you no longer have to get someone else to play your level just to make it appear in Endless and get plays naturally. It works now.
Obviously posting your levels everywhere you can is still a good thing though, as it could help you get into hot or even popular.

Actually stages getting popular seems quite random. Most of my courses have 80-200, but two of them have ~600. I didn't share them any more than the rest, they just suddenly shot up in plays overnight. I'm guessing a streamer or something somewhere may have played them.

An underwater kart stage. I know people hate karts, but give it a try! I tried to make a really easy and approachable level, plus the kart handles differently underwater which makes it interesting. Very tranquil and serene atmosphere.

The squidpocalypse is upon us. Your only hope of getting out of there is jumping on their mushy, mellow heads to make it to the next safe platform. Hard stage, comes with a janky mini boss but also has checkpoints.

A hard-ish 20 second speedrun around on/off blocks and claws (very creative and never done before, I know). Mainly hard because of the middle section which asks for very light taps of the jump button to make it past the row of claws. If you like 20 second speedruns, check it out!

Very nice course, loved it. Great design making it look like a real dig site / mining operation and the "boss fight" idea fit the course very well and was fun too.

Oh fuck, I never even considered despawning. They really need to add some tool to the game that lets you customize the load/despawn radius of specific objects

a few notes
-1st section goombas coming out of pipes can kill you from above with little time to react
- 2nd section awakened Bowser by accident
- the amount of time it takes to take goombrat to the vineblock is close to how fast it takes for it to recover
- bossfight is really tedious and unfun
- player is not given much direction after getting the spiny shell. Sure the Yoshi room was shown beforehand, but the entire level is made out of hard blocks for the player to break, which unfortunately don't give you anything.
- Items are only used as keys (and to kill bowser). Design your level to give them time to shine and be fun to use. For example the level could start by descending to the bottom, getting spiny hat, then ascending with it back up by breaking all the blocks on your way.
-You could use on-off switches to give the player unlimited spinyshells after they found one. Backtracking to get it back is really unfun.
It takes more than just locks and keys to make a good zeldalike, and fortunately you do know how to create good platforming, the first part is quite good. Keep in mind though what your goal is. When you're stage is inherently built with backtracking and puzzles, dying is really unfun. Give the player more room for making mistakes. Ice floor is something that players will immediately hate so give them space to slip and slide.

Just showcasing some of its underlying mechanics. This is a short, easy level, but I think you could make a really funky level with this thing if you messed with it. Fun power-up to try to design around, way better than I thought. It is unfortunate the rest of 3D is so intensely gimped.

Solid stage, though beetles sniping from above where the player can't see them is a real dealbreaker. There seems to be only one way to play the stage, you could come up with alternate solutions or gamechanging powerups.

It seems so intense, though it does fit. It’s a snow-themed level based around multiple paths for players to take in Multiplayer Vs., which is supposed to be rather hectic. It’s just that Gusty and the default music seem to fit the snow theme better

Try not to kill the sun as you might need him to make it to the moon section.
Thank you for your sincerity. I reused the layout from an almost complete level I was not proud of, and I have my doubts with this one. Some of your ideas are quite good so I will try to start from scracht and remade the entire level.
Also the boss has three ways of beat it, Yoshi, spiny shell and throwing goombas, do you have any advice to make it fun?
I actually completely forgot that they used slide on the snowy mountain levels in 64. I’ll probably go with that then

A) once they touch the song, have enough of the song around in the area for them to keep touching
B) drag the song onto the Mario himself and it’ll always play that song

The main problem with Bowser is how long it takes. It's good to have multiple ways to beat it but it does not seem to be encouraged, not like throwing stuff from below while skating on icicles is inherently fun either. Dunno.

In the options menu you can choose whether to lock your tags, which is whether you allow players to change the tags on your levels
