I don't get this meme.

Even the best FE stories skirt around the "okay" region in that I don't really mind their inclusion and they at least serve as setting the mood a bit, but even their more interesting ideas like FE4 is hamstrung by having the same tropes with "evil dragons did it" and one-note moustache-twirling evil villains. Then you throw the rough script into the mix and its really hard to appreciate the games on story merits alone - The gameplay is where the meat is at.

I really like the games, but I don't think their stories have ever been their strong point. To me my favorite part of FE has always been to build an army and the small, interconnected stories this results in. Maybe i get the small level 1 recruit all the way to the final chapter and he carries my ass until he gets hit by a chance crit and dies on the final map? Maybe I pair up different characters to see what their supports are and this results in new revalations about them which makes me more or less prone to use them?`FEs strength feels very character-driven - Which is exactly what it should since the TBS system lends itself extremely well to it.

As the hardware gets stronger and the series get more spotlight for being a JRPG, IntSys has been marketing the seriousness and the stakes of their story. Look at the tagline of Fates: Conquest, it's literally "Embrace the Dark". The E3 trailer for Three Houses has ZERO gameplay shown. The English version of Radiant Dawn had Preview Reels for the next chapter. They drop a lot of money on these huge cinematic CG cutscenes because they believe in their own writing and how much they expect the player to as well. Is it wrong to blame the playerbase for expecting a lot more? It's not even like IntSys doesn't have a history of writing some good stories, see Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door or Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.

2 is the fact that people think that a "simple" or "straightforward" or even just a redone story is a BAD story. It's easy to think that when you boil down an entire 20-40 hour adventure into 5 words or less. Look at how many anons and people have made fun of the "hidden dragon" plot because it happens a lot, regardless of the context that goes into that plot twist or the events that happened. Even when the games don't even bother to hide who is behind it all, people still think the ATTEMPT ITSELF is bad, should never have happened, and the entire story should be scrapped. Any writer worth their salt will tell you a good story is one that is told well, not one that "subverted your expectations".

When you combine these two things, you end up with a weird counterplay in which IntSys hypes up their next plot and to counter the effects and remain pessimistic, cynical assholes, they shit on the very structure of these plots instead of WHAT HAPPENS WITHIN.

This is something that IntSys should learn to, I love the low-scale, personal, grounded story of FE7. even if Nergal is one of the more confusing(?) villains in the franchise. But FE isn't just about the characters, its about the world they live in and how it clashes, the events that befell it and how it would be changed forever, hopefully for the positive. It's hard to be small-scale when people expect to travel across entire continents and learn the culture along the way. So they try to have these big-deal war plots, and the best way to give them is to repeat several story beats ad nauseum.

Honestly, more people should give credit to how well IntSys (used to) make these stories despite the inherent contradictions that exist in the design of Fire Emblem itself. Trying to make a character-driven, political war story in a franchise known for anyone dying at any time is very hard.

That's not to say shit like Blood Pacts, OH MY RUBBER NINIAN, alternate timelines, 1000 year sky changes, or whatever shit that is done in these games should be ignored, no. Hell no, mock this shit to the ground.
