I disagree. Unreal advanced AI makes enemies far more interesting and that game alone had more level variety than all Quake games combined, it's a much more inspired, complete single player experience while Quake just feels like some arcadey game made to kill time.

What's even the point to outsource Quake to Sabre (to cut some expanses) but announce a $1,000,000 tournament? Sure it's a joke compared to Dota 2 TIs with $25millions, but for Quake it was a gigantic prize pool.
Yet, they fucked up by letting some shit studio to develop it. And they obviously failed at it. Now QC is in limbo, id software is obviously not developing it, only a couple of freaks like Syncerror, but it's obvious that all the real staff is working on the other projects.
And they didn't officially cancel it, however it's still in early access and it was never officially released.
I'm pretty sure that it could take a niche spot and sort of restart the interest for arena shooters. Even with relatively low online with like 5000-10000 people playing it, it would be more than enough for QC.

Tim Willits is a primary reason why QC has stayed alive for so long. It is a passion project, and Tim wouldn’t let Bethesda ever shut it down no matter the population. I have a few internal sources telling me that Bethesda is finally pushing forward with pulling the plug and is giving Tim a fat check to move on. All that would be left is Sync, who is softer than a marshmallow. Without Tim, there is nothing standing in the way of Bethesda from turning off the lights for good...probably by next year’s Quakecon.

With the way they stopped talking about tournaments (there is still no official schedule for 2019) and the fact that they went from monthly patches to 3 month patch cycles it's pretty obvious that they are going to axe the game in the near future. I would say that they just halt all development by 2021 at the very latest, and they'll probably be slashing servers as they go. They a;ready killed a few servers when they switched to the whole regional server selection thing a few months ago.

The most important thing in Quake is learning how the movement works and figuring out how to maintain control of the items. Look up strafe/circle jump videos on youtube and practice if you want to get better.
