It all depends on how the subject matter is treated. MGS is enjoyable as a game and as a narrative despite any thin real-world political messages. It’s clear Kojima wanted to make a fun (at times surreal) political action thriller, and those messages just come with the story. It’s not like he sat down from day one with the intent of sending a message to the world about nuclear dangers, it happens to be a good plot motivator.

I don’t personally care whether a character is gay or whatever, but I mind when it’s because of a business decision to appeal to current trends, or changed after the fact.

And FWIW Dobson is completely wrong, because the Mario series isn’t “about” monarchies, etc.

But yeah, this whole "keep politics out of video games" stuff is just a way to dismiss politics you disagree with. You can't actually remove politics from video games.

What you have, are beliefs that are common enough that they are the "default" set of beliefs. And then you have beliefs that are either challenging to the default, or inconvenient to your own, or just plain niche. Those are the ideas that people hope go away when they shout "keep politics out". Meanwhile, the default politics continue to govern.
