Iwata said that he finds calling a game "free to play" is a lie because eventually it's not free anymore. Free-to-start is just that, it's free to start but eventually you're gonna have to either pay money or grind like hell.

For me it sounds like you can start playing it for free but you have to pay in order to progress. It's not the same as freemium where paying will make the game much easier for you, but you absolutely have to pay in order to progress.

"Free to start" is the Mario mobile game. You get a trial version and then have to pay for the rest of the game.

Iwata cleared this up years ago; he thought the term free-to-play was dishonest because they end up costing money most of the time anyway. So, Nintendo likes to use the term free-to-start because it makes you more wary of getting invested in it.
