I'm walking into bait, but Nier Automata doesn't hamfist its shit nearly as much as YIIK tried to. But even then, Nier actually does a lot of "show, don't tell." which is what YIIK severely lacked. So even the scenes that attempted to be deep weren't drawn out and weren't done simply for the sake of being "deep" like YIIK.
Yoko Taro actually knows how to write, even when translation fucks with the game, he also knows how to take actual criticism despite him making himself out to be a contrarian.

No. What the fuck are you talking about? There's so much exposition. The big plot twists are revealed in convenient text logs you. A2's entire story is literally delivered via PointPoint. The game is so pretentious it even tells you at the very end what the game was supposed to be about, and what you were supposed to get out of it.

The last one in particular is the ultimate in telling instead of showing. The game is supposed to show me things to have me draw the conclusions it wants, not tell them to me. That's what "show, don't tell" actually means.

Have you even played the fucking game? Yeah, there's novel segments, but it doesn't force you to read them. You can still find bits of dialogue that suggests things happened, thus you don't have to fully rely on it. Only if you want more context or substance about it.
And when you receive those text documents about the plot twists, the characters vocally react to it, so you don't really need to fully read it. Maybe skim at the very most.
I will however agree with you that the message was a bit forced in ending E, but that doesn't mean everything before that was also bad, or that it was pretentious. If you want a true example of pretentious: play Bioshock Infinite. You also have to remember that JRPGs have really shit translations more than half the time which sours some of the richness of it. A shame cuz I don't wanna learn Japanese just so I can have a more pleasant experience.

I'm playing it again now and I think I like it more than the Japanese one so far, which mostly sounds like phoned in seasonal anime because that's who voiced it (and I bet directed it). Still solid though, but unremarkable.

The english recording itself is also way better, sounds fuller and has more punch and weight to it. It's also mixed better. Still some missteps but overall it's another Platinum/Cavia/Yoko Taro game with a solid and memorable english cast.

Yes, Automata is nowhere near as pretentious as Bioshock Infinite. Bioshock Infinite wasn't pretentious about its message being conveyed, it was pretentious about its narrative making any fucking sense, which is so much worse.

Now, that being said, your entire argument is boiling down to "you don't have to read it, so it's not telling." I don't respect this argument at all. The point of show-don't-tell is how we experience information: are we seeing events transpire and inferring facts about them or are we being told the facts. It's story versus exposition, and if the only way to glean that information is via exposition, then it's all tell, no show. It doesn't matter that 9S is telling me shit vocally or if I don't read it, I can't experience that information in any other way.

So, here's the deal. Kira Buckland is an ass voice actor who doesn't really get the subtly of 2B's Character. She believes that when 2B is passionate or emotional she should just yell pretty much making her seem like a grade a bitch. In the sub 2B's voice has a lot more effort put into it, making herself more believable. It pretty much the Drakengard 3 problem that Demolition D made a video about a while ago.

Don't think about it too hard, all the extra stage plays and light novel stuff is mostly irrelevant. The Watchers are extra dimensional evil entities who initially gained a foothold in the Drakengard dimension by forming a pact with Zero (they are the flower in her eye, and the source of Intoner powers). They replicated once into the 5 Intoners when Zero tried to destroy the flower, and eventually turned Zero herself into the Queem Grotesquerie who is the source of the physical Watchers (aka the giant babies) we see in Drakengard 1. Dragons were the original tools the Watchers wanted to use to conquer the world but they were too smart and powerful to be tools and eventually rebelled, which is why dragons are the only things that can banish/kill Watcher-related beings. The main purpose of DoD3 is to establish this origin story as well as the original origin of Pacts and the Cult of the Watchers, as well as firmly establishing the concept of multiple timelines/dimensions which result in all the optional endings in each game being technically canon (which was already generally assumed to be true thanks to Nier but whatever).
