I'm not saying every character should have some gimmick their whole playstyle revolves around but you can at least take the fucking Trident Boomerang a step further when Fire Keese is the best you've got. Have him be able to rush in to grab the trident for a strong sweep from his current location with a second press. Imbue his trident with lightning or something to augment his attacks for a short period. Make him interesting and fun to play.

Greninja was the most popular starter and new Pokemon of Gen VI before the anime push. Sakurai just liked the design enough to make it a fighter before the games were even out. The anime and the attention it gave to it only made it more popular. It's literally just the new Charizard. A ton of Pokemon fans absolutely loathe Charizard because it's pushed super hard, but that does not change the fact that it is still the most popular starter Pokemon of all time.
Lucario was manufactured to be popular among young boys by giving it all these special powers like Mewtwo before it, but that gets a free pass because Gen I, of course. Every attempt at replacing or making another Lucario didn't stick with kids. Not furries. Kids. Kids fucking love Lucario. Kids love Greninja. Kids love Mewtwo and Charizard and every Pokemon manufactured to be cool.
