Unfortunately (And I hate to say this) there's not too many truly iconic first party characters these days as many of them are either Fighters, Assist Trophies or Spirits.
To be honest I don't think to many people would look forward to having someone like Dixie Kong or King Boo as DLC when they could have Phoenix Wright or Doomguy.

There's nothing left from Nintendo IPs, because Nintendo never makes new IPs anymore and they've used up all their old ones.

One of my biggest wishes for the series after Ultimate is to cut litterally every 3rd party (including Sonic) and pay homage to what smash once was; a celebration of Nintendo. I mean, the whole idea for Ultimate was that if Sakurai had to pull the 'everyone is here' trigger then now's the best time, so even he acknowledged/warns that the next entry may not be as grand in terms of series included. So maybe pull a soft reboot, having 30-40 characters all completely 1st party & unique (no grandad-falcon ganondorf, the mother characters using psi/pk other than Fire/Thunder/Magnet, other classes from Fire Emblem besides sword/main units, etc). Yeah, it won't have that broader appeal, but it's not supposed to, and it may get people interested in the gems of past they missed out on.

I already came to terms with it when someone like Joker, a character with literally no connection to Nintendo, got in before someone from megaten.

Literally the only outstanding 1st parties are C-listers(Bandana Dee, Waluigi, Isaac, etc.). I wouldn't mind the Astral Chain protagonist if the game turns out as good as I'm hoping, but it's too new for the pass.

Smash has had all its fighters for ages now. They're only digging into random third parties because they don't have anyone else to add. The only one I can name is toad but he's part of peach

I dont hate it, but it's definitely been bland as fuck. The only interesting one so far has been banjo, and most likely the last two will just be two more random jrpg protags with nothing interesting about them.

I'm actually pretty happy with it mainly because of Banjo Kazooie.
