Melee has certain glitches and quirks that allow you to do certain stuff the developer didn't intend. Wavedashing for example is a glitch exploit that only works on some characters, hence why they're on top of the meta ladder. Nobody likes Brawl, Smash 4 and Ultimate are probably the closest in terms of gameplay but Ultimate's a bit better in places.

A yard is a yard on every field, you get 3 strikes no matter the diamond, three point shots occur at the same exact distance etc. Compare to fighting "esports" in which not only do the conditions and rules constantly change, but so to do your tools and efficacy with particular characters. Fortnite is the most pipular esport in the world right now because though the winning conditions of their tournaments have evolved over time, their internal systems have stayed EXACTLY the same. My point being, switching games every year or two acrually makes "the fighting community" look less legitimate, as though they can not reach a proper system to have a consistently evolving competitive scene within. Meleefags say they don't need EVO, but EVO is the reason melee didn't die. If I recall, they had a final melee tournament to mark the death of melee, but then EVO happened and revived it. Armada was even going to retire.

Let's get one thing out of the way first: Smash may have numbers, but that's only the result of having so many popular characters from so many franchises in one game. The franchise sells almost exclusively by brand recognition, not because the game itself is engaging or deep. Its because smash is easier to pick and learn in the beginning. It only takes a couple of rounds to get a feel for how to move and your character's moves thanks to its simpler inputs. If you never played a traditional fighter before, the movements and inputs are going to feel awkward and will require more training and grinding in the beginning just to be mediocre. This higher learning curve turns them away as they see they get less results for more work.

well smash is designed to have like 4-8 people playing at once with a bunch of items falling down, in cases like that the stalling never happens. but the competitive community has modified the game so that its 1v1 without any items. this means you can focus on a single opponent, making it easier to run away efficiently, and you dont have to worry about item fuckery, which makes it less likely they eventually get lucky and find an item that can make you approach or at least disrupts you. even if you shortened the timer to 5 mins to match the average fighting game, certain characters/matchups would only be even more incentivized to stall because its easier to stall for 5 minutes than 8. you dont see this doubles matches though because funnily enough 4 people is how many youre meant to play with so the game can actually follow an organic pace

That's a fair point. I'd also add my observation that people get frustrated when they realize the combo they spent 2 hours labbing out doesn't actually help them in winning matches. I got introduced to fighting games via Skullgirls and practiced one combo over and over and thought I was ready to go online and then got dumpstered when I did. I kept playing but I have friends who had similar introductions to fighting games and now either refuse to play non-Smash fighting games or only grind out combos in training mode.

I know there are a lot of posts in this thread and this will go unnoticed, but the truth is smash ultimate killed melee.

A solved game is a game that the playerbase has reached the skill ceiling of. Melee is many bad things but solved is not one of them

I was getting bored with Under Night a while back and now I'm a Melty Blood player. As long as you have locals to play at, a game's age matters less than you think.

Fightcade for old games, I'd stay away from SFV, but my favorite is A3, then hyper fighting. 3s is great but I played alex(akuma/ken for tourney cuz fuck chun/yun(and that good ass cvs2 guy who played dudley) and sfiv/ssfiv were fun but post that(AE) didn't like what they were doing with balance. Some people like alpha 2 more than 3, so there's that. Under night had the best tutorial in fighting games bar none, GG apparently has a shit patch but I haven't played since #reload. Melty blood is great fun, marvel 2/3 are fun if you can enjoy cheap shit. Same with CvS2, but more SF-like. Mortal kombat 11 has good netcode as does KI, but I've only played them a tiny bit. Tekken is great, the scene where I used to be was fun, but I mainly played marvel at the time and cvs2. Try them out, it's easy as fuck for the fight cade games, but nothing beats offline scenes.

Why not just learn Skullgirls? The roster is small but there's still a bunch of varied playstyles to learn, and it even offers both 1v1 and 3v3 so you can learn the basics of team fighters/assists as well. The infinite prevention system also forces you to not reuse the same move twice per combo which teaches you combo creativity. It's honestly like a crash course in leveling up your fighting game IQ.

The only thing I dislike about Ultimate movement is it's annoying to get off platforms, you're not supposed to be able to move while you're attacking unless it's part of the move, Smash having such minimal commitment to attacks/movement is a lot of why the games are so defensive in nature.

Hypothetically let's take ESPN, they broadcast sports, and let's say they've kept baseball on their broadcast list for years, but people complain that it's too boring because it's just the same 3 teams dominating the league out 20+ teams. Chances are, ESPN would drop baseball from their broadcast list
This is the same case for Melee, it's the same 6 or so people fighting for the tournament win and everyone else trying to go for it get flushed out by the best players, leaving no room for underdogs to take the tournament from under everyones nose

again, ultimate players are attending both so there being another tournament a whole week later doesnt seem to be an issue for anybody but salty melee players

Could be interesting, but it's harder to wrap your head around a fighting game that takes place almost entirely at range in the first place. Unless you mean it's a regular fighting game except people only have like 6 bullets in their gun for the entire match and any one of them can do 80% damage under the right circumstances.
