Name a better playable cast in a JRPG than these guys.
They're all great. Not a single one is annoying or lame or useless.

That GIRL has a PENIS and I very much like that
>useless
Marle and to a lesser extent Lucca and Magus
Right here
marle is pretty fucking useless
Me on the left
Marle's pretty fucking useless in Haste Helm Trigger.
>Lucca and Magus
>Useless
You fucking what
Marle is outclassed by everyone and Magus doesn't even have dual techs. In terms of character though they're all great.
Saga Frontier
>Lucca and Magus
>Useless
Magus has some of the best triple tech in the game with those accessories. Lucca has the best double tech in the game (frog flare)
Lucca has some of the best techs in the entire game in general, single, dual, and triple all included. Not to mention she's your best source of fire magic for a majority of the game. She's easily one of the strongest characters in the cast, I have no fucking clue how someone could call her useless.
How do you pronounce Marle? Marl, Mar-lee, Mar-lay?
Maruru
Wait a minute, you can play as the ship?
I thought she was ugly and never used her when I played through it as a kid, and had no concept of a "tier list" among the characters.
First one, going based off what her real name is supposed to be (Marludia).
Crono, Ayla, Frog, and Robo are pretty much trash-tier.
>he doesn't know
Fuck off Chugga
user shush, you'll upset the "she's a nerd just like me!" waifufags.
Ayla is easily the hottest though.
I actually hesitated when it came time to swap members as I didn't want to part with any of them.
Currently at the undersea palace and I'm having a hard time finding a use for Lucca. She's just too slow.
Chrono Trigger is mediocre at best
>Currently at the undersea palace and I'm having a hard time finding a use for Lucca.
Hey you know those flying one eyed gremlins that come in multiple colors? Hit the red ones with Fire.
Crono, Marle and Lucca are lamest ones in the group. No wonder they are all dead in the sequel.
Have fun with twin golems.
I always bench Marle when Robo joins the party.
Crono, Frog, Lucca. Now that's a team.
I'd say these guys come close.
Best Crono Team:
>Crono Ayla Frog
Best Non-Crono Team:
>Marle Ayla Lucca
Is there a good patch for the SNES version (translations and item names/descriptions), or do I have to play the DS version?
If you skip a lot of fights like I do Marle is pretty great for Life 2 in boss fights and Magus being level 37 minimum is good.
If you want to break the game steal speed tabs from the panels in the Black Omen and Max out Crono, Ayla, and Magus's speed and equip haste helms. You can just mash A for all battles because you're getting 3 attacks for every one enemy one.
both persona 2 casts.
/thread
I don't know about better, but Dragon Quest VIII and Tales of Berseria all have top tier characters. DQ8 in particular has 4 great main characters.
CT cast is all shit. None have anything but about 20 minutes 9f story. Only Robos story invokes any sort of after thought and feeling.
Mechanically Ayla, Robo, and Crono are so beyond the others it is pathetic.
romhacking.net
I'm playing this one now and it's great. They took some liberties with making techs and items more accurate to the Japanese version but you can choose to exclude that from the patch.
Marle is lame and annoying. I can't think of anything she's useful for outside of dual techs and maybe haste.
Chrono Trigger cast is great. They all have interesting backstories. Just compare them to jarpigs like dragon quest where every character is just a cardboard cutout with stats.
M immanuel kant bektirm hfrl
>waaah my mom died
>waaah I'm misunderstood
>I'm a robot
>I'm a cavewoman
>I'm a moral gag who is now a frog
>I wanted to end the world bc jrpg villain but I guess now I wanna save it lol
>travel to their time periods
>learn about their past
>quests based around these characters
If you think chrono trigger cast is bad you're just a retarded nigger.
>dragon quest
>where every character is just a cardboard cutout with stats
did you only play III or IX?
Frog is based.
Why don't more JRPGs have the sort of battle system of Chrono Trigger where it's not just turn by turn?
FFVI-FFX
Persona 1-4
Dark Cloud 2
Grandia I and II
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Legaia
Basically any JRPG with a slightly good story, really. The Chrono Trigger cast is exceptionally weak.
All the Final Fantasy games of that era were like that
>Why don't more JRPGs have the sort of battle system of Chrono Trigger where it's not just turn by turn?
>Wah Marle is useless!
Every Chrono thread. It's stupid since the game is easy enough that you can beat it with anyone. And even then, she's fine. Early and mid game, she's got some of the best dual techs. Late game, she has haste and stronger heals, which makes her better than Frog.
>FFVI-FFX
Yeah, Chrono Trigger's party is so bad. Why can't they be great beloved characters like Umaro, Gau, Gogo, Cait Sith, Selphie, Amarant, Quina Lulu, Kimahri?
crono lucca robo is the only acceptable team
frog is a frog and has a sword which makes him better than marle who does neither of those
Me in the corner
BoF2, easily.
Actually most BoF games just because of how diverse the cast is. Never played 5 tho. Sorry for the ant sized picture.
This but unironically.
The only character you listed that is as bland as or worse than the CT cast is Umaro
Having just finished Ao, I have to agree. Lloyd gets a bit of demerit due the beginning of the harem angle that has so thoroughly ruined CS, but he was still quite lovable.
Grandia and FF 9
CT is pretty good though
Dudley is definitely pointless and there's no reason to have Noel in your party at the end over Wazy and Rixia , but it is still a very good cast overall.
Get the fuck outta here man. How is Lulu better than the CT crew. How is Quina hurr I just wanna eat and ruin every emotional scene better than CT
These 3 are still my favorite
We need more RPGs with simple 3-4 character parties.
>Umaro, Gogo
yeah sure they're bad
>Amarant
kinda weak
the rest are good
Also the transformations are sick
>Magus
>useless
You're funny.
Also, Marle and Lucca only seem comparatively useless because there are far more powerful party members but they aren't actually useless. Some party combinations may be better than others but there isn't a single party comp in the game that can't get shit done.
Lulu is trash, in fights and in the story.
Yeah? And Magus has a fucking scythe, which automatically makes him 10x cooler. And Robo is a Robot, which makes him 100x cooler.
None of this makes Marle bad.
Easily? The Cavern of the Stolen Fayth with Lulu's former summoner is essentially equivalent to Lucca's sidequest about her mother. That puts FFX's weakest character on par with CT's strongest character.
What game broseph?
This is pretty good, thanks user.
Chrono has a good story. You're probably one of those people who thinks a story is only "legitimate" when it has lots of death and destruction. Oh wait...Chrono has that too.
>t. never played dragon quest games
The way it evolves over the course of the game while always giving you some options is quite nice.
DQ4's cast is god tier.
Baten Kaitos Origins
REMINDER: CHRONO CROSS IS NOT FUCKING CANON AND IS A TOTAL PIECE OF SHIT.
None of these girls are playable.
>Lucca BAD
>Lulu BAD
>DQ has no good characters
is this the most tasteless thread on Yea Forums at the moment?
Chrono Trigger has a decent story. Its cast just has no real ties to any of it. Aside from Lucca and Magus, they could all be replaced by basically anyone without altering the plot heavily.
Lulu is bad.
The fusion mechanic itself is poorly implemented, though.
>Fuse a few party members for the final dungeon
>Get hit by a stray crit in a random battle
>Immediately lose Fusion form
Why not just have Fusion as permanent fixtures or at least lasting forms with various strengths and weaknesses that should be considering when fusing?
Ehhhhhhhhhhh....I love DQ4 and it’s chapter structure, but that kinda over stating it.
I thought he always wanted to save it?
No one mentioned Chrono Cross you autistic fuck its canon. Stay mad fuckboy lmao

Unbased
That's kind of a big plot point, that the cast of Chrono Trigger seemingly just stumble into Lavos by chance. But in reality, they were guided to the various time portals by an "unseen force." Which they theorize about in the campfire scene. And Chrono Cross goes into more extensively.
Persona 4's cast was shit except for Kanji
the party chat is what gives them soul
Magus is the only one still alive in Cross and technically speaking, he was rewritten to be a different character so yeah, he's likely officially dead by then.
Frog and Ayla were also already dead at the end of Chrono Trigger since they both came from the past and the game ends in the present. As soon as they returned to their own times, they were long since dead and buried.
Robo sort of survived as the Prometheus circuit but FATE terminated him so he's dead too.
Basically, the entire party was dead in Cross.
He did. That guy is just an idiot. His goal was always to defeat Lavos and save Schala.
and that force was _YOU_
who also made possible for Lucca to save her mother
>Not Chrono, Frog and Robo
TRIPLE RAAAAAAAIIIIIIID
ITS MADE BY A DIFFERENT TEAM AND DOESN'T CARRY ANY OF THE SOUL OF CHRONO TRIGGER, IT IS A PIECE OF SHIT MADE FOR JAPANESE SCUM WHO BELIEVE A MORE CONVULTED STORY FILLED WITH DEPRESSION IS DEEPER THAN A STORY THAT EBS AND FLOWS WITH THE FEELINGS OF THE HEART!
Any shin megami or mother game. Sage for shit rpg. Bad story. Bad characters. Bad gameplay. The only thing its got going for it is the music.
Losing my religion
The devs probably thought it was too powerful, but couldn't find a middleground to balance out the game.
Phantasy Star IV
Crono and Marle are never confirmed dead though, the ghosts in the Dead Sea are metaphorical, we know that's nit they're actual ghosts since the ghosts are children and they all grew up, Crono and Marle got married, and Lucca raised an orphanage and Lynx razed an orphanage
It's implied that there's a war on the mainland, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're dead
This guy gets it.
>Chrono Trigger is bad
>praises Mother in the same breath
Dude I like cock and you're way too gay for me to handle
BoF2's balance in general is pretty shit. Most of the magic in that game is totally useless, the encounter rate is bonkers, and there's way too much of a grind for the final dungeon. Capcom could make pretty great action games back in the day, but JRPGs were definitely not their forte.
Chrono trigger has a story right out of an anime for children.
>evil power threatens to destroy world
>anime sword man goes on adventure to stop it
>use the power of friendship to save the day
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hold my beer:
Best cast directly from the GOTYAY
Crono, Robo and Magnus or Frog was the patrician team.
They don't use the power of friendship, they use the power of gathering heroes, knowledge, weaponry, allies, and battle experience from across time.
Skies of Arcadia. Best Protag named Vyse, followed by his 2 wifes Aika and Fina(and both approve the relation), Cupil, mother fucking Drachma and Gilder that own their own ships, and faggot Enrique that owns Delphinus the most powerful ship in the game .
Oh yeah, and Vyse is the captain of a big pirate crew and when he got trapped in one island instead of crying he made that island his fucking pirate base. He even has a big tit girl washing their torpedos and cannons(Belle has jiggle physics for her breasts)
*blocks you're path*
They are all ugly.
Welp, too damn easy, muh nigguh
>Chrono trigger has a story right out of an anime for children.
So, just like Final Fantasy?
>use the power of friendship to save the day
But that's wrong. You know a game that uses the power of friendship? Final Fantasy IV and X. The games which fans think are the "best written."
Magus is alive in the new ending introduced by the DS version of Chrono Trigger that was basically a cheap way to connect it to Cross.
I think it is mentioned that Guardia lost or was losing the war, but I really don't remember much about Cross other Nikki's concert and Orlha's tits.
Just what are your standards of beautiness then, big boi?
Seething.
The GBA remake is pretty good about fixing the encounter rate and money drops. I didn't do any grinding personally, but I did play the GBA version. The buffing magic is okay at best, but I found Nina to be useless for anything else really.
I don't think FFX even uses the word friendship
The cast of that game pretty explicitly wins due to a combination of raw power and a willingness to sacrifice of themselves for a greater cause
Fuck final fantasy (except 2,3, and 5)
Maybe one day we'll get a new Mario game with original characters who are as likable and memorable as this
The game heavily implies that Tidus is brought to life because Yuna loved him so much. And their "bond." You can apply this to the love and friendship trope because it's just that. Friendship and love. But also because Tidus and Yuna are suppose to have a bond beyond just physical lust. Though it's laughable in the context o the story.
FFIV on the other hand goes full on Dragon Ball/Sailor Moon "give Cecil your power!" in the final battle. So him mocking Chrono Trigger for something it didn't do but earlier JRPGs did is pretty sad. JRPGs are and always have been just playable anime.
Let's cry together then, bro
>The game heavily implies that Tidus is brought to life because Yuna loved him so much. And their "bond." You can apply this to the love and friendship trope because it's just that. Friendship and love. But also because Tidus and Yuna are suppose to have a bond beyond just physical lust. Though it's laughable in the context o the story.
None of that has any bearing on the main plot of FFX or FFX-2 and has only to do with the culmination of Tidus and Yuna's personal character arcs, which is completely reasonable to revolve around relationships.
That's like saying "Ugh, Romeo and Juliet is such anime shit, it's all about the power of friendship"
AAAAAA IT'S NOT FAIR
YOU CAN'T JUST MAKE MY FAVORITE GAME OF ALL TIME AND THEN THROW ITS SERIES OFF A CLIFF IMMEDIATELY AFTER
>Tidus is brought to life
What? That doesn't happen in FFX.
>That's like saying "Ugh, Romeo and Juliet is such anime shit, it's all about the power of friendship"
And the whole reason I listed it is because it was an absurdist argument, mocking the guy who complained Chrono Trigger is "anime shit."
That user clearly didn't play the game and is relying entirely on memes to form an opinion
In the final cutscene, he clearly comes back. It may have just been symbolism, but then becomes a reality in FFX-2.
The DS version had Dalton land in 1000 AD and say he'll raise an army in Porre to crush Guardia and a new ending cutscene shows said stomping happen.
Dude, just admit you were wrong. That's very obviously not what you meant at all in your original post.
It hurts a little bit more every year
FFVII’s cast is 1000x better
In every popularity poll, you see Cloud, Sephiroth, Zack, Tifa, Aeris and Vincent. Then sometimes you see Barret, Cid and Yuffie.
The only popular and charismatic character in CT is Frog. Crono is popular as well, but only because he represents the game, but he’s a fucking blank slate.
Give me ONE good reason to play this game without spamming falcon hit
Name a game with a more useless cast.
>dude, I need you to be wrong so just admit you are!
Damn, so desperate.
I literally couldn't care less, it's immediately obvious to everyone else here you're full of shit
I just want you to learn to argue better in the future
Any kisekek game shits on chrono trigger lmao
YES even CS
Another way to look at it is, Chrono Trigger got 100x less marketing than FFVII, but still has characters show up on the same polls with FF characters. And that you're an idiot for thinking popularity = how good a character is. If that's the case, than Mickey Mouse and Mario are the best characters in all of media.
Every Suikoden game
>I literally couldn't care less
>I just want you to learn to argue better in the future
Seems like you care quite a bit, friend.
>Triggerfags consistently make themselves look like demented fanboys
Is it falseflagging, or does CT actually have one of the worst fanbases?
Useless in what way? In terms of usefulness in battle, it's the same as Chrono Trigger. You can beat the game with any character combo. In terms of plot relevance, only a couple characters matter. But the same can be said for most RPGs.
Suikoden (at least 1-3) does it better than Chrono Cross though.
>Suikoden (at least 1-3) does it better than Chrono Cross though.
No they don't, I've played them. Every character gets like 5 lines of dialogue befire they join, and after that they're just a tool in a menu.
>muh marketing
Chrono Trigger is shilled as the best game ever and always does well in popularity polls. Why doesn’t the cast do well as well? Because it’s fucking shit, that’s why. The same people who vote CT as best game evur don’t give a shit about its shitty cast.
Imagine being the one to get more emotional with every reply
The "Babby's First RPG" effect brings that out. See R/B/Y, FF4-7, DQ 3-5
>Every character gets like 5 lines of dialogue befire they join
Except how half of them have an entire story arc and develop other characters through interaction. There are definitely some that just join you after a brief conversation. But Chrono Cross does that even more. With less characters.
We have extremely different definitions of story arcs, clearly.
Chrono and Magus get high on character popularity polls all the time. Again, you're an idiot trying to argue that popularity polls (which are directly related to how much hype and marketing characters get) are a basis for how good characters are. By your logic, Lightning from Final Fantasy is just as good as Cloud.
Guess so.
>By your logic, Lightning from Final Fantasy is just as good as Cloud.
... Lightning is a better character than Cloud, though.
I mean, she gets three games to develop while Cloud "Whatever"s his way through his one game
Tough choice.
Chrono Trigger is a good contender, but raises a good point
However, I'd honestly consider FF7 for the top spot. Its cast is its best element I think, and perhaps what helped keep the game popular even with awful graphics and average gameplay for an FF.
And this isn't even including the great villains (especially Hojo), and extended cast, like the Turks.
We’re talking about the cast in general. Every FFVIi char except Cait and Red are extremely popular
Strong.
imo he doesnt give a shit about the world, he only cares about two things: saving Schala and killing Lavos, he was willing to manipulate monsters and humans and have them kill each other if that served any of those purposes.
>how diverse the cast is
Just the way we like our videogame developers.
>Lightning is a better character than Cloud
>mixes up Cloud and Squall
>Tales of Berseria
Only correct reply.
I'm disappointing Nanaki isn't more popular.
I think the inclusion of non-humanoid characters (not just the usual unique biped painted a different color), is a good initial indicator of creative writing (though I'll admit that doesn't say anything about the characters themselves beyond just appearance).
It's very common for people to mention Wild Arms to me when I mention Skies of Arcadia. I should probably get around to playing it sometime.
I do like the soundtrack. First heard of it in a thread when I was posting the Ixa Taka theme

Cloud is just as blase as Squall throughout all of FF7
Nah, fuck forced diversity in the workplace. I do enjoy that each character has their own outfit, unique look, and style of attacking. One of the things that bored the fuck out of me in FF8 was the fact most of the cast is in the same attire. Shit like that is so boring. I enjoy the idea of monster partners.
At least in Chrono Trigger each character has something making them good. In Chrono Cross 80% of the cast is literally outclassed by someone else.
Funny how everyone praises this game yet these characters are as deep as a puddle after a light rain shower.
They're actually not that way in the original Japanese. We got shitty English translations. The Cloud you remember is going to be very different in the remake. Which is actually going to piss off most people since people loved him for being a "stoic badass" yet at the same time a "funny let's mosey guy." It's interesting how Cloud can be basically whatever you want him to be...because the translation is so inconsistent. And people have to imagine most of the context themselves.
Here's some music recommendations from 3. Easy best in the series.

Crono + Ayla for falcon hit, robo because AoE heal and he's a bro.
It's almost as if you don't need to have "deep" characters to be enjoyable.
The Chrono Trigger cast is based but I loved these guys and their individual stories as well.
Did Final Fantasy V had that thing too of dead charachters or allies appearing to give them strenght or am I misrembering. The ending sequences of the dead/lost to the Void protagonists coming back for no reason is pure Power of Friendship stuff.
It's a psuedo-turn based battle game, it's not created for the gameplay.
>Frog had his own fucking saga and was best part of the game, plus sidequest with Cyrus
>Magus has backstory be in story and sidequest, trying to find sis since a kid and trying to kill Lavos
>Lucca and Marle had them in sidequests(Lucca childhood stuff with Crono and saving the mother from being cripple, Marle being descendent of Ayla and stuff about Frog's princess)
>Robo had backstory with a sidequest and its waifu
And Crono was the typical silent protag. This was enough, some endings added more plot like the relation of Crono and Marle
Berseria has a pretty fantastic cast. Laphicet kinda sucks though.
But people do like the combat. For being a more engaging version of Final Fantasy ATB. But that has nothing to do with the characters. Characters can be good without being overly complex. That's been the formula for Dragon Quest for 30 years. And this game was made by two of the core members of Dragon Quest. With the whole premise being Sakaguchi wanting to make a game "in the world of Akira Toriyama." The problem seems to be you expecting something that Chrono Trigger was never trying to do.
Describe the personalities of the blonde and black haired men in the background because they look like they would be exactly the same flavor of stoic badass.
I will after this game of SMITE. Stay tuned for an hour or so.
I wish Cait Sith died for real in the ancient temple.
>looking at the MEN in that pic
lmao you fag
I prefer FFVII's.
>he doesnt know you could choose active or wait mode, first one never stops action and the other stops action on the menus like a regular jrpg
>not playing active mode with max speed so bosses are more dynamic, faster and harder
No she doesn't, kill yourself
This. Berseria cast is something it did very right. Even someone that would normally be pretty generic like Eleanor or someone with an obnoxious fanbase like Magilou are still pretty great in the game.
Blond guy is actually a chuuni dork and the black haired one is a total bro. They’re also basically the little kid’s big brother mentors.
...how?
>evil power threatens to destroy world
>anime sword man goes on adventure to stop it
>use the power of friendship to save the day
That's basically DQ and FF in a nutshell
BASED
Thoroughly enjoyed all four selections. Thanks user.
I think the Sky trilogy has the best cast, but that's no excuse to say that CT is bad -- which it's not. It's great.
Blonde: A temporally immortal autistic pirate hellbent on living his best life while maintaining his own personal values, which he calls his creed.
Black: A pseudo-samurai always practicing to perfect his skills in both single and dual-wielding blades in order to best his older brother
B-B-BANJO AND KAZOOIE! YEAH BOYS I TOTALLY PLAYED THOSE GAMES!
Just played it recently and I definitely agree the characters were great and carried the whole thing
They already had a connection for Magus being Radical Dreamers.
>Sharla
Ayla is such a fucking bombshell. Wish she got more attention from the musclefags given her physique.
user, I think he was talking about a girl other than the playable cast. You know the one, and it certainly does have a penis.
I'm intimidated.
What do I win?
Tf you mean magus is playable
>Magus
>not annoying, lame and useless
Nice try, though.
It's funny how she was basically drooling over Crono's dick in the original Japanese. They censored it.
Nadia
Who are the FF6 cast?
Magus. That is all.
Has FF9 been mentioned yet? Because FF9.
+1
you wouldn't say that if it was an obscure jap-only release and you know that
What are all the jrpg series with more than 5 entries?
A miserable pile of secrets.
that was easy.
Amarant sucks, I don't like Eiko, Quina chews the scenery, Garnet and Vivi are amazing characters but terrible in gameplay.
You are false, but everyone is entitled to their own wrong, terrible opinions.
Or falcon hit. Will kill all of them usually
They line up most of the time
I like Lucca but Ayla + Crono is op
and frog pairs well with them as a third or robo
I fucking love this game, but Cirno is pretty much deadweight and extremely unviable against almost anything. Everyone else is great though
does literally anybody use Marle?
she might be useful but she's pretty lame and boring
She looks exactly like Vegeta, just like every character in this shitty game
Live A Live
Based shounen hero, fuck suffering fetishists.
These niggas
Yeah, but it's not a girl.
Cirno is ace against Mokou and the cow faces, her skills are gimmicky but when they work she absolutely pulls her weight. She merely seems weak because the other newcomers are so overpowered.
based, fuck these "deep" edgelords
Chrono Cross was made by many of the same people who worked on Trigger. It was written and directed by the co author of Trigger. It just feels different because it lacks Horii and Toriyama. Which most people hate Dragon Quest anyway. So it's ironic that they complain about Chrono Cross being headed by more Final Fantasy people and lacks the Dragon Quest team.
Chrono Cross is basically what Chrono would be with an all FF team and no Dragon Quest team. Are you saying you want the Dragon Quest team to come back?
