Ice Climber was the first game I've ever played. Back then when the iron curtain fell my parents bought an NES with Ice Climber bundle for my big bro and it was in circa 95 when I got his NES, because he got an SNES.
I played Ice Climber and Castlevania all day. Never beat it lol. Still baffled about how there never was a sequel.

He was actually considered for melee as an nes rep. But they had no idea how to make a move set for him, so ICs got put in instead.

Ice Climbers are a special case in that they were included BECAUSE they were irrelevant.

Sakurai included them in Melee because he wanted a character that harkened back to the one-off NES era of games like Clu Clu Land, Urban Champion, Excitebike, etc. He had a list of candidates for the position like Bubbles and Balloon Fighter but ultimately went with Ice Climbers because he saw potential in their duo based gameplay. But the first and primary reason they were included was because he wanted an NES rep.

A game that sold well, he should be playable whereas shitty retro characters should be demoted to assist trophies.

Too late for him now, the next game should just remove the retro characters all together, nobody plays them anymore and they’re not as unique as they used to be, he’d bring nothing new.

Marth unironically fights a lot more like Link in FE3/1 than he does like "Marth" does in Smash. He's also using a weird thrusting style, which would make sense if he was using a rapier but he's using his sword Falchion so he should be slashing. He also doesn't have his shield, the Binding Shield (Fire Emblem).

Easy peasy. Excitebiker, alike the game, would have a bike heat mechanic. Unlike in Excitebike, the heat would give you higher damage/speed, but would deal a certain % per in-game second. It's a risk/reward mechanic.
>Neutral B: Rev Up/Heat Expulsion
Excitebiker can rev up his bike when he's underneath a certain heat level to gain heat, or once he's past it, he can release it as an explosion, dealing heavy damage based on how much heat he has.
>Side B: Wheelie
Similar kind of move to Wario's, but more fast and not as flexible.
>Down B: OIl Slick
Excitebiker shoots an oil slick out of his exhaust pipe, which acts like Inkling's Ink Effect but still slows down the opponent once leaving it.
>Up B: Ramp
Excitebiker summons a ramp and rides right off of it.
Normals consists of some punches and physical attacks with the bike.
Aerials consist of aerial tricks.

The thing is, R.O.B and Duck Hunt weren't "retro reps" in the same way Ice Climbers were. They may of hailed from the same era, but they were, in Sakurai's words, "surprise characters". Same thing with Mr. Game & Watch.

And Piranha Plant is intended to be Ultimate's equivalent. Thus showing that these characters included for different reasons than Icies.
