This music sounds more like "friend" than "rival" to me.

It's not Avant Garde because the guy who did it had no clue what he was doing because he couldn't read music (avant-garde is one of those "learn the rules to break them" things), but I do enjoy some of the tracks from Evergrace and the other games he composed for. They're very busy and off-kilter, and depending on what it's trying to convey that can work in its favor (the street shop theme from Evergrace does a great job at evoking a busy street marketplace in its sound). How much of its merit is intentional is probably very little though.
