If my predictions right, it's all Claudes fault. The character bio says that he doesn't like leaving anything to chance. Perhaps through shifty politics he inadvertently causes the entire continent to go to war. This is helpful context. It def doesn't feel like this game pulls a ton of punches. Deaths happen. Sometimes people escape for story reasons (as they have in just about every FE game ever) but there are also major deaths and it is made clear that the deaths are final. I haven't noticed a ton of dissonance in Byleth's character, mostly because there's, uh, not a lot to Byleth's character. There's a lot of quiet nodding ala Link in Legend of Zelda. Mostly the house heads are the major players in these stories.

Outside of plot reasoning I legit see no gameplay downside to child units as a mechanic. Not saying a FE game needs to have child units to be good, but from a mechanical standpoint I think it adds a significant layer to the strategy and makes supports more concretely useful in that they actually result in something outside of a stat boost.

Post Chapter 12 there are barely any units UNLESS you go off and do the children missions which only open if you got a female character's support to S (Males don't matter). If one of them dies WHOOPS NOW YOU LOSE 2 UNITS INSTEAD OF ONE. Oh, and all the Children are lv 10 in every map AND all the enemies are promoted units. Now you get to enjoy grinding them up to be as useful as the rest of the party.
You know, this, instead of how every other fucking Fire Emblem game worked where they just gave you units as you progressed the game. You pretty much have to play Awakening with Permadeath off unless you want to pull your fucking hair out.
