The entire top row is fantastic and worth playing even today. I still have fond memories of going to a friends house and dicking about on the first few maps of C&C1 and loving the badly acted briefing videos.
The bottom row ranges from okay to fucking trash, with C&C4 being so bad it literally killed the series.
My favourite part of the early series was those briefing videos. I loved how they were made to feel like some secret encoded transmission directly to you and how you were meant to be some secret high ranking hidden commander for whatever factions transmissions you chose to recieve. Tiberium Sun was a better game than the first but they dropped the ball by adding a character you were supposed to be into the FMVs instead.

Tiberian Dawn (C&C 1) or Red Alert 1. Stories are connected, but with really tiny thread, so it's not important where you start.

I'd say Red Alert 2, C&C3 and Generals are the best ones. Pick whatever looks most interesting to you can play that.
Or you can start at the start of the story like this guy if you don't mind going super retro and doing a thorough look at the franchise.

Any of the games are good to start with, just dont touch cnc 4. that game should not exist and is worse than voldemort.
My recommendations is either red alert 2 or generals(i just love the cheesyness of generals)

Fun as fuck, while I am a wc3 guy myself, I would gladly take C&C over starcraft for my sci-fi RTS
