Man why did they drop the ball with Ryuji? He's based as fuck for the first arc and his confidant but then grabs the retard ball and holds it firmly for the rest of the game. I know it's pretty much his character flaw since he's the guy who failed to become a sports star in HS and is now making up for lost time as a glamorous and popular phantom thief but it still annoys me how they made his apology scene at the end so small and inconsequential by relegating it to a phone call.

That's just because the P4 cast is full of retards. Chie is a female meathead, Rise is a bimbo, Teddie is a brainless mascot, and Kanji doesn't even talk about the story 90% of the time.
Junpei and Ryuji are absolutely normal dudes with very human flaws. Difference is, they work through those flaws and/or contribute meaningfully to the party in spite of their flaws. They just look stupider than Yosuke because their party members are somewhat competent.

Yosuke only appears more "intelligent" than the others because his ape outs are usually at smaller things and are thus less impactful to the overall story. But my main problem is he has no reason to be a retard, Ryuji has a tough social life that insulates him from receiving the nurturing he needs from teachers, Junpei had a rough home life that did not leave him any real role models. What does Yosuke have? He's new to town and lonely, as someone whos moved around alot as a kid sure it makes you a little autistic but not a shitsucking moron.

I won't argue that Yosuke has better character development because of course he doesn't; P4 and 5 don't do that. But Yosuke is somebody I'd really want to spend time with - same with the rest of the P4 cast. They're designed to be marketable and make you think "I wish I had friends this genuine and close".

Yeah, I misremembered. Although Kanji and Naoto are much less direct/aggressive about it. Kanji just says they need to do something to make him pay and Naoto subtly alludes to the idea that they could push him into the TV. Yosuke goes on a passionate 2 minute long rant about how they should do it.

Wanting the "bad ending" doesn't make him a bad person, or an idiot. For Yosuke it indicated how close he was to MC, that the death of his homie's imouto would drive him to murderous vengeance. For Naoto it showed that she was willing to put aside "justice" for the sake of an expedient solution to the suffering she and her friends had been put through.
