Yes. I like the SNES version the best.

Yes

At some point you should put a Fighter in your party. There's an item that doubles your character's agility, and every two points of agility adds one point of defense to your character.

Having a wizard early on is also helpful to get past higher DEF enemies, plus you can always change their class into a martial character way later on

I am best tactician.

I am playing the nes version right now, the goddamn wizard is a fucking piece of shit, why does he always have to get hit by everyone

Nobody told me Maribel's mage outfit was so lewd holy shit

What game?

Kill yourself fake fan

Ignore OP Guys, he's clearly a fake fan who only plays DQ because it's featured in Smash. I hate fake fans like these

The one that has Maribel, obviously

>Hey guys, I want to try playing this old game I've never played before and am not previously a fan of
>FAKE FAN
autist
that's the whole point of Smash, introducing people to new series

Are you playing the uncensored version with original orchestral soundtrack? Because you really should be. Aisha is lewd as fuck in her thief outfit.
DQ VII, now on 3ds. Under rated game, if slightly longer than it needs to be.

I am not familiar with it, sorry

Attached: 1563199648237.jpg (627x502, 43K)

Fuck off no it's not

Dragon Quest was popular before Smash and had several games in the West. OP is just a fake fan zoomer wanted to be a part of something big

>DQ VII, now on 3ds
Oooh, I might try it out, thanks

One of the best games ever made user.

no one here was even talking about smash until you showed up.

Attached: Screenshot_1.png (153x231, 98K)

Great question. Would anyone like to answer?

You might want to play DQ VIII first, if you haven't already. It does a much better job of easing you into the DQ style if you're new. Also on the 3ds, although the PS2 emulated version runs better.

Semi related since it’s the only DQ thread up but the new DQM may be revealed August 3rd. They are showing something Erik related and he along with his sister are the protagonists

I'm at 142 hours and still not at end game, although I have been doing dlc maps and writing monster entries for a website.

It's good, but it's system is outclassed by later games in the series (like 8 and 9).

I still prefer three for nostalgia reasons though.

Get a mage. All the buff and debuff skills are on the mage.

But it IS. Earthbound would be nowhere without Smash having Ness and Lucas.

>WAAAH MUH SEKRIT CLUB

It's a fucking video game and god forbid zoomers play something actually good.

Do you see people play Virtua Fighter or Fatal Frame because of Smash? Hell no.

Earthbound would still have had games without Smash, I don't get your logic.

I'm gonna give it a try, thanks user

Goodie, I see the "fake fan fuck off" shitposter is seeking fresh blood in Dragon Quest threads now that Kid Icarus threads are basically extinct and everyone has decided to oblige in giving him attention

Zoomer here, kill yourselves. I've been playing DQ for more years than you old farts have left to live.

Except that's THE POINT of Smash.
To expose people to things they may not have known about before.
That's how it worked out for FE with Melee

Why are you telling this to the second guy?

>Earthbound would still have had games without Smash
It doesnt even have games now.

what does personality even do?

That's because Itoi thinks that franchises that overstay their welcome become bad, he himself doesn't want to make a continuation because of this reason

Attached: 1563249071182.gif (400x300, 851K)

Affects stat distribution. Sort of like natures in the pokemon games.

so which ones are best?

depends on what you want out of the character as different personalities confer different bonuses. The exception to this are female characters and the sexy/vamp personality as its a large positive gain to all stats when most are more balanced to favour certain stats while having negatives in others. The male version is if i recall properly, Lucky. Its not as good with mostly minor bonuses with a high bonus to luck. its not horrible because there are no negatives but its not as amazing as sexy is for females.

Attached: Screenshot_19.png (890x665, 124K)

I mean, aren't they all?

you:
>lol those zoomers have such terrible taste in vidya, all they play is the shiny new shit like fortnite
also you:
>wtf why are these zoomers playing old games all of a sudden? OBVIOUSLY it's becasuse their favorite let's player recommended it to them, because they can't think for themselves
There's no winning with you guys, is there?

Sexy, female exclusive.
The difference is minor though. I think it's was only made that way so that the devs could have a giggle about the perfectionists out there being compelled to make parties of perverted women.

besides 3 and 9 which dragon quest games let me play as hero+ 3 girls in dangerous swimsuit party?

> moving the goalpost
Retard

Oh would you look at that? It's time for me to play 9.

Sexy/Vamp is the best "jack of all stats" personality. It improves every stat, but only by a little.

DQ3 characters don't change outfit when you change their equipment, so 9 I guess?

IV? Hero, Maya, Meena, Alena

oh but they do

How come clerics are the sexiest?

Attached: DQ 3 Cleric Megares.jpg (2480x3508, 2.91M)

>played the game for first time recently
>went with fighter, cleric and wizard
>wizard dies so often
>theres like almost no good wizard weapons or armor
>only use magic for when I need it
Would honestly just make it a warrior or something and leave most physical immune enemies to the hero with magic.

>answer questions as honestly as possible
>get lonesome
fuck

Attached: 1552701354879.gif (336x256, 401K)

ditch the cleric and take a warrior. they're expensive but even with just hand-me-downs and dungeon drops they'll put out reliable damage and can soak it up. herbs are fine for healing for a good third of the game

You can in III, but it's female-only.
Man, the men really got the short end of the stick in that game, didn't they?

Yep.

meant to reply to

Yeah thats the SNES version
IV mobile version is the best version so once you finish III go right into 4. Party chat just makes the game so much better

>ditch the cleric
you can only heal 30 with medicinal herbs and clerics can equip decent damaging gear too, I just feel like wizard is definitely a waste of time, I changed my fighter to a sage though. When I played I never fiddled around with the other classes but I guess maybe dealer or thief could be worth using instead of the wizard, I think the best ability my wizard has that I used often was upper and eventually bikill.

Im almost tempted to play mobile II to wash away my nightmares of finishing DWII NES. Fucking brutal bastard of a game.

desu when i first played the NES version I never used wizard starting out but a couple months ago when i played through the mobile port, I picked up a wizard and loved it. She generally had enough MP to constantly cast spells throughout whatever dungeon I was in and the extra damage against the prevalent high def enemies was great.

also i meant warrior/soldier not fighter. Dealer is terrible outside the start of the game. Thief is alright.

The Mother franchise was already concluded by the time Lucas was added. What the fuck are you people on about?

I got lazy and that I'm driving people away from me. This game is mean.

what level should I be to kill that Fat Knight in the ruins South West in DQI?
I get wrecked at lvl 8 I grind while I commute

>3rd time playing
>Decided to do a Jester, Priest, Mage run
>In the end got Hero, Priest, and 2 Sages
No one stood a fucking chance against me.

Attached: DQ3 SNES.jpg (1280x1184, 69K)

2sages is so fucking good

>I grind while i commute

Same friend. I've started playing through the series after seeing the recent DQ threads, having never really been interested in the. Im doing it in order and currently nearing the end of 2, having a blast so far. Excited to see what 3 and beyond are like.

You need to slightly grind a bit more sadly at the start. Because how the Jester will randomly just do nothing (or worse hurt himself). But once you get the 2 Sages and start leveling them up the game becomes insanely broken.
Also I feel the best team up for someone first time in DQ3 is Priest, Fighter, Solider. And have the Solider become your Sage. Fighter do insane damage and think they crit more often the higher level they get.

DQ3 is unironically one of the best games ever made

Attached: 6.jpg (1054x1500, 569K)

When does the game stop being boring?

You're gonna love 3 user!

Attached: 1562912742563.gif (400x225, 1.96M)

Go get the Golden Claws in the Pyramid

Honestly for real only 3 and beyond I would call playable
1 is just outdated and archaic legitimately not fun, I mean fuck 90% of the game you spend grinding.
2 is a massive upgrade over 1 but still pretty archaic and the late game makes most people drop the game.
3 feels like a superior Final Fantasy 1, it has its fair share of cryptic and grinding but not nearly enough as the first 2 I think growing up playing the first 3 games must have been amazing though.
4 and beyond really feel like large grand JRPG's going on a journey and experiencing a story which 1-3 don't really have much of a story.
Basically JRPGs before 1990 kinda ass imho

I might get crucified for this but I know I/II are important for III but I was so archaic I just watched a GDQ run of it. How much does II improve on the formula? I want to get to III so I was considering just watching a quick run of II as well but if it's really worth playing I can put off III

How much space does the bag have?

>2 gives you a party of 3 fixed characters
>can now save at castles instead of the same place over and over
>adds the ship (which honestly you could call it a negative because how cryptic those games are you WILL get lost)
>larger world
>each character has their own inventory.

II just adds the ability for multiple party members and enemies.

DQ1 was Enix/Chunsoft teaching people about RPG. It's grindy but it's honestly build well in terms of freedom of exploring (if you are high enough) and secrets the same does well saying where you should look.

DQ2 was them trying to build upon DQ1 in a lot of ways but never give themselves enough time to balance it. It's just annoying once you get the boat and sailing around with no one offering anything so you are just wondering hoping to find something.

DQ3 feels like they really took the time to mold it into something workable. People are vague in terms of hints but it's way more than DQ2 and so you could potentially know what they are saying.

DQ4 is honestly my favorite of the NES games mostly since I just enjoyed the chapter system. Makes each character feel more alive.
Party members
More spells
Gear can be used in battle for effects

Honestly a speed run won't really help you if you wish to get into DQ3. Since DQ1 and 2 is more of random NPC hinting of past things. Like Erdricks deed and places you visit and items to use. Speed run of DQ2 will completely skip over all that and just get all the crests and grind until Rhome and end.

Which Dragon Quest/s are the most influential on anime?

Probably 3

How do you beat the knight in DQI tho?

The abberent? Literally just be a high enough level. DQ 1 is literally grinding: the game

When should I switch party members, and with what?

Is II the game with the seals scattered around? Yeah, fuck that part.

Best party for me when I played 3 was hero, fighter, cleric, and warrior

I made the cleric into a sage (most people turn someone else into a sage but I think at the time I didn't know you could turn anyone into a sage. I thought it was just clerics.

First time?
Priest, Fighter, Solider
Solider can be a Mage if you want more multi target spells but honestly you can hold off on that until later. First quarter (start until boat) the spells aren't as useful but around post 20 you start to see more and more useful ones so it's up to you.

Priest can just stay Priest since having 2 healers is great at times.

And Fighter is such a damage powerhouse throughout the game it's best to just leave as is.

I want to FONDLE a thief

People ITT seem pretty reasonable so I wanna know your opinions on something I've always wondered. Do you think old RPG games like DQI/II and FFI/II are actually good games and is "a product of its time" a real thing? It just seems like there was a turning point in RPGs where certain mechanics were introduced and the games started becoming timeless. DQ and FF IV for example hold up against RPGs made today. But for most people that I/II era feel like chores and a lot of the game is just indecipherable cryptic "clues" and wandering around lost for hours.

Man, Pachisi is just a jackpot of stat boosters.

DQ1 issue is how grindy it is. And not in a typical JRPG grindy but full on hour long grind to get a level or two near the end.

DQ2 issue is poor balancing especially at the end and just vague hints on what you should be doing. The game is bad in that you have 0 clue what you should be doing so you are just bouncing around the world hoping to run into something useful and not in a fun way.

I don't even say "product of their time" more the team was learning as they were developing and DQ3 is a product of their knowledge of working on DQ1 and 2.

FF1 I feel is honestly an amazing game. Maybe a bit too hard at some parts (NES game at least) but overall it does a good job at giving you a fun world to explore.

FF2 is just weird in almost every aspect. There's a reason the guy behind it never worked on another FF game and instead made his own series SaGa.

FFI is 100% a product of its time, not counting its many revamps which bring their own issues (mostly dealing with the game not being balanced around magic points instead of limited casts of spells per level). It was a fantastic game for its time but its so buggy and so much shit just doesnt work right. I could never recommend someone to play the NES version in the current year unless they were well used to old buggy shit. I never played FFII when it was relevant so I cant say for certain but theres a reason why the guy who made it got kicked out and told to make his own thing.

IMO DQI/II are bad. They're both grinding: the game, without even the benefit of being able to make your own party or playstyle like FF1 allows for. They definitely did not get big on the quality of their gameplay, DQ3 however is an actually very good game. One of the best for the system and a top tier selection when it comes to turn based rpgs as a whole.

>Answer questions as honest as possible
>Get honest

Attached: 1509473427143.png (491x585, 56K)

DQ3 is extremely boring. At least DQ4 has party chat.

>Get solitude
Thanks game.

no. it only gets good after the original trilogy.

>replaying IX
>ghost teaches me a party trick called Weird Dance
>it's literally flossing
Wish I could post a webm of it or something.

Haven't played III in a while, but I have my next party all sorted out:
>Hero
>Warrior -> Jester -> Sage
>Priest -> Mage -> Thief -> Dealer
>Mage -> Priest -> Fighter
Really, I just want to force myself to play as classes that I ignored the first time around.

youtu.be/PuxKGisS45Q?t=67

Getting lost is part of adventuring.

Is there a good DQ game on the 3DS? I’ve never played one

I watched it, it's not flossing. Everyone stand down.

You need an imagination to fully enjoy it. Sorry you don't have one.

Attached: overworld-2.png (4395x4112, 1.01M)

DQ7 and 8. 7 is a game you either really love it or hate it. It's really slow and really long but if you can get into the grove of how the game is done it's one of the best in the series personally but I'm one of the few that honestly LOVE DQ7. DQ8 however is a game everyone really loves and a good starting point for many people. That or DQ11 which is out now on modern systems.

It's the most generic sterile fantasy setting ever, user. If the characters have no personality/backstory how am I supposed to enjoy it, especially after playing dozens of rich jrpgs already?

I recommend not playing DQ7 as your first Dragon Quest. I say that when its my favorite one. Play 8, its a very good starting point into the series if you're only looking at the 3DS ones.

Will second that I fucking love 7. It was actually my first Dragon Quest and more than any RPG I just feel like I came into a living world and it was just a joy to explore and invest myself.

All Dragon Quest heroes are that. At least personality wise. As for backstory it tends to just be "chosen by god to defeat the evil one" in every game.

I named my fighter after myself. I'm fucking One Punch Man in DQ3.
>Oh is that a giant dragon with a turtle shell?
Galactica Phantom... DOKKAN!

Attached: e82fe35d5c3aef5b975292ae376a4e6e.jpg (600x851, 130K)

Play 8, it's babby's first DQ, and a great game.
But be sure to patch in the orchestrated soundtrack, same for 7.

Name them after friends/family/waifu and fucking develop an imagination so you can enjoy things without having your hand held every single moment.

They're hired mercenaries that you meet in a bar, what's there to really explore personality-wise?

Seven is in fact PEAK Dragon Quest. I would have better things to say about eight if it hadn't felt like a giant step backwards.

Attached: 1534984598232.gif (480x416, 48K)

The SNES version of III is fucking gorgeous

Stat growths. Valiant is best on hero. Answer no for first question then yes for the rest. For final question leave town after trying to talk to one person.

I get why they scaled back when making DQ8. They wanted a more main story focus game instead of bite size stories daisy chaining from one into another. Don't think they will ever go back to that style of story telling because people love their giant world being together than DQ7 that separate everything to tell a single story.

Fun fact about DQ8, they were like weeks away from finding a way to make the towns also on the world map. As in you didn't load into a separate instance when you walked into town you just simply walked in no load. Shit was gonna be ahead of the curve if they just got a month or so more dev time.

I'm playing this right now. Anyone know how to make the guards in baharata cave stop blocking the doors?

They never comment on anything or react to my decisions. It's a little boring having blank slate pokemon follow me around.

>tfw no 7 Android western release so I can pirate it

Screenshot? I don't remember any guards blocking a cave. I remember a guard blocking a castle and need invisible herb to get past him.

did you fight kandar in the tower west of kazave? when you beat him you'll be able to get in iirc

you're supposed to pretend that the hero is literally you and your party are your harem. use your imaginiation.

I've spoken to everyone in the town already.

Yes

Did you go to Portoga and talk to the king to go on the quest to get pepper?

5 - Waifus and Pokemon before either of them was a thing.

I don't think this happens in the NES version, but I may be wrong.

just feels good.
running around in mario world or walljumping in MMX is just great.

>Waifus didn't exist in anime/manga before 1992
I'm laughing at you

Yeah. The king gave me a note to give the cave dwarf and then I went to Baharata.

Did you see a scene in Baharata where a guy runs off to rescue the girl? And talk to the old man about how they are both in danger? That's really the only thing I can think of. Maybe go into town at night and talk to everything just in case. Trying to think of what you are missing and can't really think of anything outside of that.

Does this only happen at night? I'll try it.

Don't remember. But it's best to go into town at night and day and talk to everyone since there are things that only happen at night.

Go to the desert, mate.

It dabbed on the flawless battle system and has shitty music and the towns are too fucking big.

I found the old man and the girl in the lower section of the town. I had no idea that was even there.

>shitty music
i see, you're a resetera tranny. nevermind then.

toriyamas early 90s style is so fucking good

funny because a big part of XI ost is lifted from earlier dragon quest games.
kys

I sure don't remember the 8-bit themes from DQIII in that game. A game's soundtrack is not just the written composition of its music

You're the one playing it, you tell us.

lol

No, I think he has a point. Waifu culture probably wasn't a substantial thing in Japan that shaped otaku identity until Evangelion.

This absolutely isn't true. Sailor Moon was four years prior. Evangelion literally riffs on the idea of the "perfect girl" with Rei.

Is this LP a decent thing to use as a progression guideline?

DQ 3 is designed so well I don't even know how you get lost unless you stop playing and come back after awhile. Maybe if you want party recommendations. DQ2 guide is a nice friend for the hell you can find yourself in.

I beat 3 pretty easily without a guide.

i was looking at a guide constantly for DQ 1 and 2 but for 3 i'm using it a lot less

Abso-fucking-lutely.

Played it on NES for the first time two years ago. Easily one of the best games I have ever played.

Manga: 1991-97 (ignoring shorts released in 2004)
